Filthy 50

I raced the Filthy 50 for the first time yesterday; and I have to say, GREAT RACE! Great course, amazing organization, fun crowd, and the best weather!

If you love gravel races, this is one to add to the calendar!

I had the GoPro mounted under my saddle and set to time lap photos. I got some nice pictures in the first 10-15 miles until a bump 'adjusted' the mount - then there were a couple thousand pictures of a blue sky.

Looks like a great race, huge crowd which I always like. Most of the races around here that can scrounge up that many riders are 100+ mile events...I personally have a lot more fun at the 50-ish range where I'm not toast by the end. Maybe someday I'll make it up there

Results were just posted, I finished 139th with a time of 3:11:30. I did some digging to find out I just missed the podium - 4th place of the roughly 50 fatbike that registered. I'm planning tweaks for 2017 to get on the podium. First, don't be in the back of the starting area talking with a friend when people are lining up for the start. I spent the first 5 to 10 miles working my way up the field of 800 riders.

The Filthy was a great race (or ride) this year. I love the fact that this remains a free-to-enter race that attracts an amazingly diverse group of riders. Fat bikes, tandems, single speed, the guy with a boombox on the back of his bike. The only thing I didn't see was a recumbent. I suspect the 2,600 feet of climbing discourages those folks.

The course was beautiful and weather perfect.

It looks like a fantastic ride from the pics posted on the website, and your picture above. Was the surface I saw in the pictures representative of the course? It looks pretty hard pack, which would be awesome.

The Filthy 50 and Almanzo 100 are both south of Rochester, MN; this area is a mix of "hero-gravel" and some soft, deep gravel. There is enough deep gravel that I use the fatbike for races/rides in this area (I lack skills for riding the soft gravel - especially on the fast descents). OTOH, the Filthy 50 does not include any low-maintenance roads (B-Roads).

Looks like a fun time.

Anyone in the Blaine area down for a morning gravel ride next Saturday, November 5? Around 40 miles or so? And also has a 56cm bike I can borrow?

Visiting my sister-in-law next weekend. They're not bike people and it's not practical to bring my bike with me, but I can probably get away with a morning gravel ride before everyone else gets up and moving around.

Update: The 2017 Filthy 50 was last Sunday & WHAT GREAT DAY TO RIDE GRAVEL WITH FRIENDS!!

It's hard to find a more beautiful course, and somehow this ride has amazing weather every year. Plus, nearly every single gravel buddy is out riding, and with over 600 riders, you get to meet new gravel buddies too!

Results: It was a good day for fast rides - a new course record we set at 2:20:09 I just missed the podium for men's fatbikes (4th of 21 riders) with a time of 2:56:57 (my goal was to get in under 3 hours ); and I was 113th place overall (521 finishers & 610 started).

This is such a wonderful video showing the joy of gravel.

And you'll see Herr & Frau Toad finishing with their tandem around 7:30 just as Trenton says "... rookie and veteran ... " and that was us, Frau Toad's first time riding a gravel race and this Toad done more gravel rides/races than could be counted.

If you can get to Minnesota for it, sign up! The Filthy will be returning to Lanesboro, Minnesota on Saturday, October 8th, 2022. Registration will go live on the summer solstice, Tuesday, June 21st, 2022 at 8am CDT.
