Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saw first cherry blossom last night.

They're all over the city, pretty soon the outdoor riding will be gorgeous and picturesque. I went by a tree with a few opened flowers last night, it hadn't started to bloom the day before.

Signs of spring in your neighborhood?

Crocus (croci?, what's the plural?) have been up for a week or two. My butterfly bushes started leafing out over the President's Day weekend which is wa-a-a-ay too early. All the other trees and shrubbery was budding last week just in time to get frost burned -- such is the karma of plants in this area.

Wild flowers are going crazy here in central Tx due to all the rain we had this winter. Looks like someone painted the landscape in places. Need to get out in the country this weekend.

First? They're all over the place in Norcal, they started blooming in mid-February, even though we were drowning in rain storms.

You folks get a big headstart over us. Many here in the northeast consider the peak period of cherry blossoms in DC to be the real proof that spring is here. That's usually between now and mid April, but the warm February brought them out early, just in time to be burned by this week's cold.

I saw a few starting to blossom last week. I think next weekend is when my local Cherry Blossom Park will have it's festival. The trees on the way to work are still bare though. However, Plum Blossom trees bloom in February here, and sometimes late January!

Can't really tell here. Though I guess when whale sightings taper off that's a good indication. Don't even have daylight savings time to go by either.

The cherry blossoms were very late here this year, but they were pretty beautiful yesterday after the rain stopped. I got to enjoy them on a "group ride" with my 4 year old and 6 year old. I even took my road bike with me.

And now it's cool and windy again.

In town there are plenty of regularly maintained beds with daffodils and such, but for the most part, the trees are still pretty bare. Yesterday's ride up to Bear Mt. was as brown and bare as ever.

Here in Boston, definitive spring is announced by the blossoming magnolia trees along Commonwealth Ave (“Comm Ave”). Two days ago I took a picture of their current status as fuzzy buds…maybe in about two weeks.

This weekend is another early spring event, the Boston Marathon. I think it always precedes the peak of the magnolias. In any event, after a week of rain, the winter salt is gone, and I rode the pristine S-works yesterday. I rode it once in February since being in storage since December, but now it’s out for good.
