Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Boonen in Playboy

Does anyone hear speak Dutch? Apparently there is some article on Boonen's website about an appearance he made in Playboy. Somehow I can't picture him posing there. Does anyone know what the article on boonen's website is talking about? It is in the news section under "April"

Most Belgians speak either Flemish which is as close to Dutch as any language could be, or French - and many speak both!

It's as close as any language could be because it's the SAME language.

Flemish, which is spoken mostly in the north (Flanders, basically)...think of it like Spanish spoken in South America, versus Spanish spoken in Spain when comparing it to Dutch in the Netherlands. Belgium declared their independence from the Netherlands in the early 1800's...thus the influence.

French, spoken mostly in the south (Wallonia, basically).

And a lot of English...

Belgium is made up of 3 regions Wallonia, Flanders, and the Capitol Brussels (NATO headquarters)

For anyone that is really interested in Belgium look at the long article in Cycle Sport America May 2005..... It goes into great detail the cultural differences between the Wallonians, and the Flemish (French language vs. Flemish). It also talks about the history of Belgian riders and where they hailed from.

Edited: For posting while being sleepy

Possibly you mean NATO, and/or the European Common Market.

Brussels has been, for some time, the financial hub of Europe.

I believe that most would consider London and Frankfurt as the financial capitols of Europe.

not a great analogy considering that the flemish were once part of the netherlands, but opted to remain loyal to spain. a better analogy is the differences between the korean spoken in the south, and the korean spoken in the north (which IIRC is slightly different these days).

well, last i checked the EU has yet to kick in to a full Federal state, and while the EU Parliament is in Brussels, the real decisions are still made in London, Paris, Berlin, den Haag, Vilnius, Rome, etc...

God, do you guys know how to kill a thread. We start with Playboy, and then morph to whether Brussels with the EU, or London with financial markets is the capitol of Europe. You guys must be a blast at parties.
