Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My daughters got their first phones in middle school because there were times they were not under parent or school supervision. Pretty much the same as your reasoning.

When I was that age, there were plenty of times my parents couldn't have found me if they needed to.

Fat chance, 212s are like a commodity. You’d have to sell your boy in order to get one.

Definitely. I roamed pretty far and wide when I was around his age. I also broke my collarbone and had to ride 3 miles back home, one-handed during my 4th grade summer. Being able to call someone would have been nice, but I actually tried to hide it from my mom for as long as I could, though, thinking that I'd get in trouble, so maybe I wouldn't have called her, anyway.

Regardless, we have a phone that we'd otherwise recycle and adding another line is pretty low-cost.

I’m struggling with this for my oldest, who turns 10 next month. While I don’t really want to get her a phone, my strong preference is that it goes on my mobile plan vs her mother’s so I can monitor what she’s doing. This means I may have to beat her to the punch.

We got our kids phones when they were 12. That was 10 and 13 years ago, respectively. I see nothing wrong with age 10 these days.

Daughter? I don't think that I'll be as troubled with my daughter. I mean, I just plan on locking her away so that she can't talk to or otherwise interact with boys, so no worries there.

Boys and girls these days. If you are going to do it, you can't sexually discriminate.

Alternate plan...Teach her to be self-confident, strong, and have a low tolerance for bull$#!+. They grow up to be adults, whether you like it or not. Help them be prepared to take on the world for themselves. In my house that included learning how to hit things really hard with a stick (my little one has turned out to be really excellent with that part).

My 4.5 year old girl is already well on her way down this path. It's both a source of frustration and amusement.

We got ours a phone at 12 and that was 18 yeas ago. Simple logistical and safety decision. Of course, those were the days of text limits and she went nuts, precipitating a bataille royale chez nous, but that’s another story.
