100 km

Beautiful day with temps between about 20 and 22C and a bit of wind about, increasing throughout the day.
Shortly after 11 am, Rowan and I set off on a bicycle ride with no time limits. Most of our longer rides have been Audax rides and therefore have a time limit. This one was not an Audax ride ... it was just a ride to see what we could do if we had no time limits and no need to rush.
We flew! For us, that is. We sat on 20 km/h for the first 40 km which is quite a brisk pace ... for us. However we were assisted by a tail wind.
Just after 40 km, we arrived in the town we were aiming for and had lunch and a pretty decent break.
Then we headed back, meandering here and there. The wind was a challenging factor on the way back at times, but with no time limits, we kept moving and stopped now and then for a rest.
We had about 10 km to reach our goal when we arrived back at our start location, so we rode up and down roads until we got there.
100 km!!
That's the first time we've done that distance since Rowan's accident almost 5 years ago. And it's 27 km more than our previous longest distance since that accident.
It's quite an accomplishment for us!!

Congrats.
I am really pleased to hear this news. After so long without any news, I assumed Rowan was not going to recover any further, which was kind of sad. If he is now able to ride 100 km .... that is fantastic.

Yes, I think he would like to do a 100 km again. But it does take quite a bit of effort to build up to doing that ... whereas in the past, we'd just go out and ride 100 km.
However, we did two 50Ks in close succession just recently ... one on March 3 and one on March 9. I think that's the first time we've ridden 50Ks so close together since Rowan's accident.
Rowan's brain injury is permanent, as are many of the symptoms including a weaker left leg and right arm, but he is still reasonably strong and when riding a bicycle, he can compensate for the weakness ... mostly. He did say that his right leg was very tired at the end of the 100 km.

I cannot believe it’s been 5 years.
I am currently in rehab recovering from sepsis and the heart surgery it required. I haven’t been home since I was found near dead on my kitchen floor on 12/31. Hard to imagine riding a bike right now. I still need a walker to get around and will need a lift in the house for a while.

A great start to the season.
I’ve been doing about 30km per day when the weather allows, which is something of a feat in central Tokyo. I hope to be doing 50km per day in May, preparing for a ride across Hokkaido in July.
