I like the criteria that the Classic Rendezvous Forum uses: i.e. nothing newer than bikes/parts made in1983. Basically this would include bikes or components such as those using index shifting. Certain exceptions would include bikes or frames that are designated "keeper of the flame" (KOF) which include modern builders using steel tubing and lugs. Just my opinion and point of view.

Since SIS debuted in 1985, won’t you be “excluding” bikes from that year forward?

According to the Classicrendezvous (CR) forum, yes SIS bikes would be excluded. Actually anything from 1983 forward would be excluded except "keeper of the flame" bikes. Even Campagnolo C-Record parts are excluded from general discussion. This is just one point of view for classic bikes. Of course, frames that fit the CR definition of "vintage" with SIS is sort of in a grey zone but their discussion is not permitted on the CR forum.

Well, my '89 Cinelli with Dura Ace 7400/7700 and downtube shifters certainly looks a lot more C&V than many other bikes I've seen. The CR Forum will just have to make due without the pleasure of my presence.

I think it depends on your perspective, so I grew up in the 80's so for me a classic bike is an 80's era bike. Pretty much any bike 20 years old or older ; )
something that creates nostalgia, which is always dangerous as nostalgia can become expensive when trying to recreate your youth....

1983 was the last period of Tullio.

1984 brought the Corsa Record ( yeah felt like 1985-86 ) but there are 1984 date coded C Record parts - I have a set of cranks so marked.
SIS was also introduced in 1984- sort of.
the Suntour patent ended Nov 1984 in the USA. October 1984 in Japan.
the parts were made and as soon as the Suntour patent ended the gates opened for distribution.

RE: #105 smd4
Classicrendezvous (CR) has a 1983 cutoff
Eroica has an 1987 cutoff

Dates make it more difficult, think the components of any lugged steel prior to 90 should be allowed given dt shifters and ofcourse not using clip on pedal for eroica.
Id allow your Cinelli from what is described.

I think "classic" might be less printed, just solid colors and a simple design, and a "vintage" might be a professional and very tight-fitting jersey Actually it doesn't have a good definition, most of the results come from those jersey vendors

Nothing constitutes a C&V bicycle….

Self-identify it as C&V and presto: Done.
It’s about what you want it to be.
Tradition, guidelines, generally accepted standards, all moot.
They just generate debate, and that’s not allowed.

Wait, might this thread be debate?
Uh, oh.

Since the dawn of time, someone has wanted the upper hand.

If it’s a bike, it’s C&V. There.

I'm a vintage rider. My bike had to be rebuilt and so did my knees.

Ooooooooo... You going to try to see how thin the ice is again?

I honestly don't give 2 ***** about what's C&V. I see it more as watershed years. Large changes in the industry. I suppose they could be used as a definition, but again, I think debating it is silly. Of course the following is an approximation, plus or minus a couplethree years.

1887 - Pneumatic tires and safety bike.
1930 - Lug carving, use of aluminum, modern geometry, derailleurs
1951 - Parallel-o-gram derailleur, groupsets, paved roads
1983 - Indexing, clipless pedals, crabon fiber, aero

On the other hand, I know what isn't C&V. Blue bikes. They suck.

I have a blue one in the pipeline waiting to be worked over. It's the rustiest thing I own and I am considering making it red when I get around to it.

This is a long thread--bikes all look new to me--I have an Indian Scout (by Phillips) 3 speed hub dated 52--I'm original owner and it still rides well.

Neighbor offered me an old bike hanging in his garage. Saw it yesterday but difficult to access without a lift. Found it's a Triumph about sane age as my Indian
