Hey guys, getting back into cycling after many years off the bike. Problem is I’ve developed dry eye syndrome over the last few years. I can’t wear contacts anymore and I’m blind as a bat without my glasses, so I need to get some rx eyewear for cycling.

I tried to get rx lenses made for my oakleys that I had been using, but they can’t get the prescription right with the curvature of the lens, so I need to find some athletic glasses that use a straight lens. My eye doctor doesn’t have anything like that.

Does anyone use anything like that or point me in the right direction?

I’ve been having a hard time as well. Blender glasses are pretty reasonable with prescription, but they don’t have anything cycling specific last time I checked.

Try calling around to local eye doctors and see what they carry or can order. There are plenty of sport sunglasses that will work fine for cycling.

Find a good dealer and see if Rudy Project can help you. They make Rx inserts with little curvature. If your Rx changes you don’t have to buy new lenses, only a new insert.

Look at Tifosi as well, they are quite reasonable. The LBS I use is a dealer and they one of the mechs got some made and he has a fairly complex prescription and they were far under what I paid for my last set of oakley lenses. When I need to upgrade my lenses, I will be looking into them. You can order them direct on their site as well.

I had been wearing some prescription ANSI safety glasses, but they don't have very large lenses and they are not transition so they don't darken in the sun. We had a bunch of money left in our healthcare spending account at the end of 2021, so I went looking for something better. Didn't like the true sports glasses, and I didn't really need something impact-resistant. Ended up with a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses with progressive, transition lenses. I can wear them day or night, and they provide enough coverage to keep the bugs out of my eyes. Plus I now have these as a backup to my regular glasses.

I would think a good optician can look at your prescription and figure out what style frame/lens you need to make it accurately. I also think that when it comes to progressive lenses, you get what you pay for. Mine are not cheap ($500-$700), but I've also never had any problems adapting to them. So consider that too.

That's a great site to look at your options, but don't assume because it is online they are cheaper. The Maui Jim's I have are the Byron Bays. That site has the prescription version starting at $600. When I optioned them out, they came to more than I spent and they were not transition. You might find a local optician can beat those prices, and make sure you get the right fit.

Got these with Photocromatic lenses for a whopping $20. They have inserts for prescription lenses. Quality is just fine.

Adhoc is a taiwanese company that makes RX sunglasses. I have one of their earlier generations (from almost 8/9 years ago) and the way they make theirs is they would have a cut out that they inserted and fuse the RX part and the non-RX perimeter. The benefit of that is the lens is essentially a one-piece construction with no sandwich layer to trap fog or rubbing. their later generations bypass that and have the RX as part of the curved lens. I was told that they use special calculation to account for the curvature of the lens, so no dizzling.

I bought RX glasses direct from Tifosi. Prompt service and the price was good. I also bought Tifosi glasses from SportRX but returned them because the prescription didn't look right. They said the glasses didn't go through QC and are remaking them. Their price was about $100 more than direct from Tifosi.

I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes and my vision improved but I still have astigmatism enough that seeing close (numbers on my bike computer) is a little blurry with single vision lens. SportRX says progressive lens would not be possible with curved lens I want. I'm learning to live with the blurry numbers which are better the brighter the light is.

I didn't realize Tifosi makes true Rx glasses. Several years ago I saw they had regular glasses with reading strips built into the bottoms of the lenses. Unfortunately, I am beyond that now.

I had a pair of Tifosi BITD, before I needed a Rx. I agree that they are reasonably priced and of good quality.

Yea my friend at the shop told me they used to just be setup for inserts, but they moved to complete lenses. He really likes his. He has a daily wear pair using the Swank model and the Onyx Clear style. They look really nice. I think he said he got the Dolomite for his riding glasses, but I could be wrong on that, but I know he said he saved so much money, he ended getting a dedicated pair for this riding, which is the same thing I have but with the Oakley's. If they had had these when I went with the Oakley's I would have gone with Tifosi, as I really liked their glasses before I needed help seeing out of them. .

That interesting as my Flax Jackets from Oakley are curved and I have progressive lens, I guess it all depends on how curved they are. I know some of my daily wear frames I had and really like had a rather short height, so getting progressive lens were going to be sketchy, so I ended up moving to a different frame.

Later today I heard from SportRX. They can make my Tofosi order with progressive lens. It will take a week or two. I will see how they turn out.

Last month I was looking for a pair of RX cycling specific sunglasses. Originally was going to use sportrx, but after looking at different brand sunglasses I decided I would look at brands like Costa and Maui Jim only because they offer fairly large lensed glasses with fantastic nose and temple grip.

The reason I went with this style glasses frame is because, I have an astigmatism in both eyes and if I try and put a progressive lens greater than a base curve 6, I experience too much distortion. Most glasses that wrap are a base curve 8. So, when I went for my I exam I looked at what glasses the Doc had on hand for me to try and low and behold the Maui Jim, Red Sands fit great had really good coverage,super light, and were the ones I ordered.

Maui Jim, is not owned by Luxotica like a majority frame makers and warranties their own product. Costa, was purchased by luxotica and their warranty has supposedly gone down hill. Took about a week, Received the glasses and very impressed with the the glass (actually polycarbonate) and prescription, They are meant to be a tad big on the face and as far I'm concerned are perfect for the recreational rider.

The lens has the grey base tint with blue mirror, have slightly warm view to them and are polarized. At first I thought I might have a problem seeing my Garmin 830 but however garmin has polarized the 830's display, it is not a problem for my Maui Jim Red Sands.

I thought for sure Cycling specific glasses were a must, almost pulled the trigger on some Rudy Project frames since I already knew they were high quality. But boy,are the Maui Jim Red sands, are extremely versatile. I can wear them driving,walking around the hood,watching sporting events,and even beach and fishing which is what Maui Jim touts them as being exceptional at.. Point being you don't have to lock into cycling specific glasses to get very nice performing sunglasses.

I have used Haber vision multiple times over the years. I also used Tifosi as we had a deal with a sponsor at one point. Got some really nicely done polarized and mirrored RX lenses on them and loved them. Used them even after my RX changed they ended up lost at Disney. Still miss those.

Now I just have an old Tifosi setup with an RX insert that has clear lenses I used to use at the velodrome.

Then I got progressives. I debated getting just the long distance RX ground into some sunglasses to save some $ but apparently there's some places that will so progressives. Guess I need a new eye exam and then need to check out what to get.
