Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Why would you choose FG instead of SS?

I do not understand. SS allows you to bomb steep hills, bunny hop without warning, take tight corners at high speeds, and avoid slapping pedals on curbs. FG gives you really sexy bike asthetics.

I have three bikes (1 geared, 2 ss) and just added number four to the stable. I LOVE LOVE super hard sprints on the drops which means racing on a velodrome has always appealed to me. If I make bike number four a fixed gear I will be able to join my friends on their monthly trip to the velodrome but if I did that why would I choose to ride my FG over my SS outside of the track?

I guess I am just looking for opinions.

Damn. Here I was going down hills on my fixed gear; not to mention hopping curbs and taking corners. Didn't realize I wasn't able to that. Guess I'll go throw that piece of junk in the trash.

Instead of trying to start some sort of debate, just read some of the threads. If you're happier riding with a freewheel than a fixed cog, so be it. Besides, I bet I could out ride - and out sprint - you on any day, any street, or up and down any hill you put in front of me. Brakeless.
