I think part of the appeal of riding vintage bikes is that we can build a nice bike for a lot less than new.
Yeah, we're cheap.

Did you try Joann's Fabrics? I took a look and saw you have one in Peoria.

If you can't, PM me and I'll mail you a few yards of mine.

For the pleather look, I've applied shellac to cork tape in "natural" color. Effect is pretty good:

I did that on faux cork once. It didn't soak in, and peeled off fairly quickly. Make sure it's the real McCoy if you want to try this.

If you apply the cotton tape when it is damp it will have then have some stretch.
If you then wrap the bars with the tape under mild tension, the tape will tighten up significantly when it dries.

Here’s another supplier….https://www.twilltape.com/3-4/

some colors in 3/4 tape if you drink all of your coffee and don’t have the leftovers for dyeing….

As someone who's used amber polyurethane varnish on many, many woodworking projects. I'm wondering if there's any reason it wouldn't work as well as shellac (or better) in this application?

It's available in any hardware store (cheap) and thins with standard mineral spirits.

While we're all saving money, has anyone used a mashed pile of ants instead of shellac?

Coffee in your bar tape. New meaning for buzzing hands after a ride.

I'm into the experimentation and cost-effectiveness of the method, gugie . Thanks for sharing.

Interesting that they do custom imprints -- I'd imagine the possibilities are endless.

BF logo repeated? Campagnolo logo? Or Bianchi on some Celestesque color tape?

Thanks for the post!!

I was going to start a project this holiday weekend and was planning out the grips. I just ordered the natural (only 5 left in stock) and it will be delivered on Sunday! That actually makes me feel a bit guilty how easy and cheap it is to get stuff.

Try Etsy

Joann’s won’t have real linen. Not in a tape. You might be able to find it on Etsy from a specialty seller. It’s used in bookmaking for the spines. Reenactment sutlers might also carry it…but they won’t be cheap.

Not sure if it really matters whether it's real linen or not (I never mentioned linen), but I did check online, looks like Joann's doesn't have 3/4"' twill cotton available online. I did buy some 3/4" herringbone something or other at Joann's a couple of years ago, so my local store at least carried it. And I have posted links where you can buy it for dirt cheap online at the $0.07 I quoted in post #1 of this thread.

Post #15 mentions linen so I just assumed real linen. As a fiber, linen is twice as strong as cotton so it would hold up better. But no worries, looks like the cotton twill is a good option for saving $$$. Interesting thread, BTW, thanks for sharing.

Ordered. Some day I need to get a load of real leather of the appropriate weight and texture and go on a bar-stitching frenzy. I despise wrapping bars, but far less so with cloth than with plastic or cork.

I like the herringbone look and am thinking I should try inner tube padding. I have another frame I'm thinking about setting up.

Wrapped

So I did the twill tape thing. Hand dyed to get the right red. I just wrapped over the 80s foam padding that was already there…for now. It actually turned out pretty good. Thanks for the tip.

Nice! Those foam handlebar pads get a bad rap (wrap?) by many, but they're pretty comfortable. The red tape finish de-dorkifies them.
