1989 Bianchi Giro - Columbus SLX

Well I just bought a Bianchi Specialissima frame and fork and there’s no room in this town for two Celeste Bianchi. With a somewhat heavy heart this one goes on the block. It is 57 cm c-c top and seat tubes with 164 mm head tube. Columbus SLX steel with Gipiemme dropouts. The story: I bought a Bianchi Giro from the original owner a few years ago but the frame was a little too big, so after a long search I found the right size frame and moved everything over. Only difference from the original is decal scheme is different - Euro or Canadian market maybe? I got the frame off eBay but I think it belonged to a BFer. There are a few paint dings but everything is touched up nicely. It still has the stickers on seat stay caps and top of BB shell. The little stickers over the holes in the rear dropouts are still there! ( I moved those over from the old frame).

Campy Athena 7 speed throughout with crisp Syncro 2 shifting (proves the haters wrong!).
Fir EL 25 wheels with Athena hubs.
126 spaced, Italian BB thread
3T Status 125 mm stem, which I changed from the OEM but I can dig around for something different if desired.
Selle Italia Turbo-like saddle but not marked as such.
Pedals not included.

$750 complete bike, $450 frame/fork + shipping and any PP fees

These are some older photos but I can get more if needed.

If I liked Bianchis, I'd like that one.

PM sent on the group/wheels.

I bought the frameset from SL in 2019 but the Celeste color that year-kind of a minty pearl- turned out not to be to my liking. Has been professionally resprayed, equipped with Dura Ace 7700.
It’s a lovely ride, took it on several out of state centuries pre-Covid.

You have excellent taste sir! As noted, Doc gave this frameset a very good home. If you’re not committed to Celeste this one has been lingering over on Paceline.

I’m going to pretend I didn’t read that! Fingers over eyes! I’ve been lusting over one of the mint Celeste ones for a few years now.

(shrugs shoulders)
At any rate, it’s a much more loveable House of Kolor Hot Pink Pearl now.
And...it rocks. Maybe the best imperial century ride ever.

1989 Bianchi Giro/Mondial

Spaghetti Legs

Blast from the past:

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...op-models.html

"...the Mondiale, SuperLeggera and Giro all shared the same frame, Bianchi Italy just used the same frame across the line with the chromed chainstay after Bianchi USA printed their catalog."

In the late 80's early 90's, depending on the regional market Bianchi (like most of the other big Euro makers) played foot loose and fancy free with details and model names of their top bikes.

I picked up this 55cm NOS 1990 "SLX" frame in 2010. It had been sitting in a box at a LBS since 1990. Back then you could buy the "Mondial" as a bare frame but there was no model name on the top tube.

I built it with a kludge of different era Campy components.

I took the frame to a local frame builder friend's shop to check the alignment... It was perfect, but... he said "Chas. this SLX frame is going to be a stiff riding bike!"

He was right. It fits me perfectly and the handling is superb. It's one of my top 10 favorite bikes and climbs like a mountain goatbut I wouldn't want to ride it for more than about 30 miles. Caveat, I'm a fat old man and at my age I like cushy riding bikes.

A little larger SLX frame like on Spaghetti Leg's 57cm C-to-C / 58cm C-to-T bike will be much smoother riding.

BTW, I paid considerably more than $450 just for my frame so this is a very good deal for the complete bike - essentially a Giro badged Mondial with nice components!

I’m just giving you a hard time. Mostly jealous.
Sounds like you’ve got good taste though. Is it a pink like this? This is one of my favorite riding bikes!

^^^

Never fear, Doc will always do right by a bike.

verktyg That’s the secret to that model year Bianchi, Mondiale performance for Giro price! The original Giro, I bought for a song from the original owner but it turned out to be a little too big. I sold the frame/fork and bought another from a BFer (it turns out) via ebay. The original was color and decal scheme like yours pictured, but the new one, which I still think was ‘89, maybe ‘88, was the pearlier looking Celeste and different decals and I wonder if it was a Canadian or Euro market model. I was careful to transfer the tiny round Bianchi stickers on the rear dropouts, so I hope they made it through Doc’s repaint.
