I needed a cheap but decent cycling shoe a couple years ago to replace my Shimano MT-41's and found nothing under $120 in my LBS. Just before I walked out the door I spotted these (Gray/Neon Green) for $60. They go everywhere and do everything. But you can't slip them off! Don't even think about it. You have to loosen at least three eyelets worth before they will come off your foot. That's a good thing, I guess ...

For Flat Pedals I have gone to a sturdy pair of Skate Shoes. Personally, I’m using lace up Vans because the outlet center is down the street. They are robust, grippy and have a stiff and are widely available.
