Addiction 2022.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Even my blue tape gets black. I clean it with Formula 409 and a stiff brush but I worry about the cleaner soaking through to the bar. I also tried Armor All upholstery cleaner, not as effective. Tape is getting pretty worn out so I could switch to black, then I could let it get real nasty.

All my bikes have black tape, except the Battaglin because it's a "Red bike/bright alloy/white saddle/white tape" situation, and the Bianchi - because it's a Bianchi, so the bar tape is, of course, celeste.

Open water swimming easier imo if you are allowed to use a wetsuit. Trust me, I am a former triathlete. Kinda. I did a few, longest was Olympic length.

Yep. I can swim around in a pool, I've body surfed and boogie boarded in the Pacific. I also nearly drowned trying to make it out to a floating dock thing in Castaic Lake.

When I was a ute there was a teacher strike and they sent us home. I was probably about 14 or 15. A friend and I hitch hiked to Santa Monica and went into the ocean and got stuck in a rip tide. We both thought we were going to drown but we made it out and collapsed on the sand, exhausted.

Also helps to be at least minimally able to swim. I've never been good at it, even with lessons.

I never had lessons, or even advice or pointers from swimmers.

Yeah, my tri career was about 10 years ago and only lasted about 3 seasons. Running is stupid and swimming is boring. I am now a one-trick pony.

When we were in the VI last month, 4 of us embarked on a swim of about 300 yards from the boat to a snorkeling spot. I was a bit nervous, but it wasn’t too bad. Easy to float in salt water. Belly fat helps also.

I’ve never been a good swimmer. People always asked how I could be so into sailing and enjoy being on the water in light of that. I just always tell them that if you stay on the friggin boat, you don’t have to know how to swim.

I also don’t swim in lakes. I have to be able to see my toes.

Dropped my phone while riding yesterday, no obvious damage but when I got home it was well and truly screwed. It was sort of nice being without one for a day.

My wife and I swim offshore in Marblehead, def need a wetsuit and it makes it a lot easier. I’m tri-curious and may do a sprint this summer with some friends.
