We used to go to Avalon when the kids were young and it was still a sleepy little town. Took cruisers to the Avalon Freeze in the evenings. Sweet memories.

A few pics from yesterday's ride...It was hot one, with temps near 90 degrees by the bay. I avoided going inland where temps are higher and stayed closer to water. That's the theme for the photos below. Started out in Berkeley and made my way along the foothills, past Lake Temescal Park on my way toward the city of Montclair. A good day for a swim.
Next, I looped around Lake Merritt in Oakland before heading toward the Bay Trail.
A final shot of the trail by Aquatic Park in Berkeley.

Rode in the local forest across from my old elementary. Just a short, muddy ride.

Edit : I see now Park Pre. I’m going to look into those, don’t know anything about them. I see Park Pre and think “Stop Pre” (Prefontaine)
I took my new to me Merckx Pro out for another shakedown ride today. Went to the south end of Skyline Drive. 10 miles in and about 1/3 way up a 2 mile climb I got a progressive knocking sound coming from maybe the rear hub.I couldn’t identify an immediately fixable problem, so decided not to press my luck and turned for home. I suspect the rear hub needs an overhaul; wheel hung on a hook for a couple of years at least. I’ll have to have a long talk with my mechanic later and chastise him for letting me go out like that.

Same ol' beautiful spot, new test ride. The last of my three estate sale buys that I've been working on. I think I'll call it French Fit Bird Sh*t because the custom paint job has some spots that really resemble bird droppings. Last weekend in Portland was 55 and raining, this weekend is 90 and sunny. Go figure.

Finally getting some good weather here in the PNW. We rode a loop around the north end of Lake Washington last night.
Fun fact: This would be the first time that I rode with Thomas, using integrated brake/shifters while he was using dt friction levers...

On Friday Julie sent out a call to her boys to go ride Sunrise Road before it opens to Car traffic for the Summer.
Riding into Mt. Rainier National Park Saturday morning we get news from the Ranger station at the White River entrance that Sunrise road is closed to all users for an undetermined amount of time while Park employees get the Visitors Center ready for opening day.
We decided to ride up Cayuse and Chinook Passes and check back later..
Chinook summit with my buddy Ty. I love riding with Ty because we are evenly matched. Some days he’s faster, some days I am. Great fun to be challenged by him.

A super fun descent back into the park to Sunrise road. The rangers were just getting ready to let cyclists past the gate.

10 miles of steady climbing then a slight downhill finish to the Sunrise Visitors Center

Ty and I have a bite to eat and mill about waiting for the others for about 30 minutes before setting off back to the cars. It had been agreed we needn’t wait for them so off we go. We stop when we see them at Sunrise Point and say our good byes. They continue on and Ty and I take the descent at speed. A few rollers and a climb out of the White river entrance and the day is done. My legs are thrashed and it feels so good….well, at least until I begin the drive home. I had to stop twice and get out and walk off leg cramps.. Hah!

@gugie and I recreated the original Neal Lerner Invitational from five years ago. It's a route we do often, but today we went the extra mile (mile and a half, actually) to finish the ride where we finished the original at the Old Market Pub.
From the first ride in 2017:
Today:
I wish the rest of the crew from the first ride could have been with us again. One of the bikes was. The two French beauties we had out today deserve a better look.

A couple of pcs from yesterday's ride. I dicovered this house in the East Bay hills recently and decided I had to take my LOOK for a pic in front of a Mondrian-inspired backdrop.
Nice hazy afternoon overlooking the bay.

Today, I went out on the Merlin for a short ~15 miles or so. It's been a while since I rode this bike. A few months back, I mounted some too-big 27mm tubulars on this bike that just barely had enough clearance. But then I broke a spoke on a ride and I had to do some aggressive adjustments on the adjacent spokes to true the wheel enough to get home. I finally got around to mounting some smaller 25mm tires (thanks @hazetguy), and I was reminded how nice the Merlin rides.

Tour de Squalor on Bloody Sunday!
Saint Paul, Minnesota, on the mighty Mississippi. It appears the amenities have suffered significantly since I last visited down here. There is lots of new affordable housing in temporary installments down along the river. Our new neighbors are quiet at this time of morning, huddled in their tents, as they were. Respecting their privacy as much as I could, I did not point my camera anywhere else on this trail.
Seņor Brown appears in good health these days. No mask!? Muy valiente!
A (Dawes) Ranger among the ruins. The zeitgeist is very Pre-Apocalyptic here this morning. Time to fortify with a Bloody Mary somewhere...
Cheers?
