Weird Presta valve….what’s this?
What’s this all about? It’s unlike any Presta valve I’ve seen and a Google search didn’t help.
the valve end unscrews completely and is solid, almost like a metal dust cap.
thanks for any advice! Not quite sure how best to pump it up, once the patch has dried!

Barchettaman ,that is a Dunlop valve/stem, not a presta. Do not see many on bikes in the USA. I believe parts of Europe still has a fair amount of use with these. I have no experience with them, cannot even remember actually seeing one, other than pictures.

Ok many thanks. It seems to function like a Schraeder valve with a dust cap that threads internally….super weird. I’ll do a bit of research.
edited to add: it doesn’t seem to be a typical Dunlop valve. The plot thickens.

Looks Like a Dunlop to me, actually have one in the shop. To remove the air, undo the knurled nut and just pull out the core.

It doesn’t have a removable core. It’s like a miniature Schraeder, with the metal end acting like a dust cap but with internal threading.
seems to work ok, so I will just put it in the spares box now it’s been patched. A conventional Presta is now on the bike.

Is the inner valve core spring loaded (like a Schraeder) or operated by differential pressure (like a Presta)? I assume it's the latter. I'll probably never see one of these in my life, but in case the subject arises at a cocktail party, I'll be prepared to participate in the conversation.

It's not a Dunlop valve. It's a rare valve standard, don't know its name but I've seen a few of them over the years.

just for context, my kid bought it when he had a catastrophic tyre/tube failure on his bike packing trip this summer. He went with three friends (all aged 16/17) from Frankfurt to Lake Garda and back to Innsbruck.
The tyre let go as they were on the outskirts of Trentino, fortunately not on a Alpine descent!
