I've been lurking around the forum since I picked up my gently used 2018 Quick 1 from a friend in the spring of 2019. I was considering a Trek FX3 disc and had previously tried out a lower level model in the Quick line at the local Cannondale dealer. After one season and 700 miles on the Quick, she upgraded to a Specialized Roubaix for more speed. When I expressed interest, she brought it for me to try out. I rode it around for about 10 minutes and sealed the deal. I picked it up for a not much more than the FX3 disc I was planning to purchase. (It also included 2 Cannondale bottle holders and a Cannondale kickstand.) Hydraulic discs, 2x11 105 group set, and carbon blade fork made for a huge improvement over the FX3 and all were a new experience to me. And for the first time in my life I had a bike that actually fit my 5'6" self.

Here it is as I purchased it. I believe the saddle that was on it was a Specialized Toupe and I found it surprisingly comfortable.




I'm sharing my experiences and upgrades so that any others with this bike can learn from my experiences. I'll be updating the thread periodically as I make any changes or upgrades.

Summer 2019 - For the first season, I put approximately 1,200 miles on it as received. The only addition was the installation of my old Bontrager bike computer and some mountain bike bar ends from the LBS.

The bike came with 700x30c Schwalbe Spicer K-Guard tires on it and found that 75-80 lbs pressure was the best compromise for my riding. The surface streets on my way to the Cedar Valley Trail are Iowa rough and they worked great but I was pondering a tire upgrade in the future. I also found myself on some loose crushed limestone trail which was an unpleasant experience.

Other than some dialing in of the front and rear derailluers, I did nothing to the bike in the first 1,200 miles. Riding was probably 1/3 surface streets to get to the Cedar Valley Trail and 2/3 on the trail.

Summer 2020 - I logged approximately 500 mile and made some upgrades - necessary and optional - to the bike.

Tapping into the wisdom of a close friend that also bikes, I replaced the chain after the coveted Park Tools chain stretch tool showed significant wear. Chain and tool were both sourced at the LBS and Cannondale dealer.

I upgraded the saddle and seat post to make it more comfortable.

A late season change was replacing the 700x30C Schwalbe Spicer K-Guard tires. In my research discovered the Quick 1-4 share the same frame which is different than the lower level Quicks. Even after opening up my search, I found little online information about swapping to larger tires on any of them. Someone upgraded to 700x32c and there was discussion around moving to 35Cs or 38Cs but no actual installs. After some additional research, I purchased 700x35C Schwalbe Marathon GT Tours in October and managed to get several late season rides before winter arrived. Improved ride on surface streets and still grippy and handles well.

Riding decreased due to a job change and some other challenges in my personal life. A fair amount of the 2020 miles included my daughter riding a tagalong bike behind me.

Summer 2021 - Another low mile year for me - 200 miles total. Between job, weather, and family I did not find the time/space to get out on the trails.

The only upgrade was swapping out the original Cannondale handgrips and generic bar ends for Ergon GP5 combo. These were the suggested by a friend and I appreciate the comfort and additional positions that they offer. I am still fine tuning them to my liking.

Here's hoping 2022 is a better year for riding.

I've picked up some early season upgrades in celebration of my 50th birthday - the first being an upgraded set of lights. A trip to the LBS yielded Blackburn Dayblazer front and rear lights. This will help with visibility on surface streets and reduce my disposable battery usage. While they are not everyone's thing, a pair of SKS Bluemel Stingray Black/Gray fenders arrived today. The bike has mounts on it so I expect the install to be fairly simple and allow for additional ride opportunities.

Fenders installed. Not hard but tedious and took longer than I expected. Installed the front first with the biggest problem was find a bolt to attach the fender to the fork. Fortunately one of my other projects donated the metric bolt. I used the fork mounts and it went well. It took a bit of fine tuning to get things lined up. Cutting the mounts was by far the worst part of the install. My Dremel is dead and my hacksaw is MIA since I reorganized my garage so a pair of side cuts made slow and painful progress.

All done and road ready! I had to make some adjustments on the front fender but now that everything is in place they are quiet and don't rattle. Now to fix the creaky seat post...

I like the look of your ride. I have the 9-speed Quick version and an 11-speed Topstone. With the hills around here, I often wish I had the smaller gap n gear ratio for my knees but not a deal-breaker. I also changed the type of tire, went to the 37mm like my Topstone and it has made a big difference in ride comfort. I tried a different handlebar and it was nice but went back to the flat bar as the more upright I sat the more it hurt my back. Hadn't considered fenders but I like the look of yours so I might rethink that. Also thinking of trying those hand grips you have. Do you like the feel and can the upright be adjusted independently from the grip itself?

Helderberg - Thanks for the kind words. Aesthetics are a big deal to me so changes I make to bikes (and cars too) need to visually work for me. (Note: working together and matching are different things.) These additions were made with that in mind. I'm really happy with the way the fenders look and the way the bike has come together.

The GP5 grips are independently adjustable from the bar ends so it is simply a process of adjust and try it out - I'm still working on that. Grips are where I want them but need to work on the ends. I like the multiple hand positions they offer but are more visually distracting than I prefer. Time will tell if they stay or go.

I'm also considering adding a rack on the rear of the bike to hold supplies for family rides on the Cedar Valley Trail. Time to research options.

I tried these with the flat bar handlebar but they were too close together and I found it tricky to control on bumpy surfaces. I also changed the crankset from 175mm to a 165mm with the same gear count. Changed the rear cogs with a lower big gear to try to give me a better ratio for the hills here. Also changed the rear D and it did help but I miss having the close-ratio I have with the 11-speed Topstone.

No updates here in eastern Iowa. We have received unseasonably cold and rainy weather in April. The only decent riding times have occurred when I have been stuck on the road for work so the bike is still parked. Here's hoping for some decent weather this weekend.

I also have a Quick 1 Disc - 2017 or 2018 (not sure).

Great bike - I purchased this bike last summer to return to riding after long layoff.

Currently in process of upgrading - so far installed Ultegra / 6800 crank and rear derailleur, Dura Ace / R9100 cassette, and Panaracer Gravelking SS tires.

I plan to complete remaining upgrades in the next month or so (as time permits).

I'd like to upgrade the crank to 105 to match the rear but I'll leave good enough alone. I'm also nervous to make major driveline changes because I happy with the bike as it is. I'll tackle the swap after I get more comfortable with upgrades on an older bike.

I'll be removing the Bontrager Trip 1 and install a Lezyne Enhanced Micro C GPS from another bike I just purchased.

the initial plan was to go with a 105 / 5800 crank - but was unable to find one (34/50 170mm)

finally did find a new Ultegra / 6800 crank on eBay

the 6800 crank and bottom bracket are around 1/2 pound lighter than the OEM crank and bottom bracket

Removed the Trip 1 and installed the Lyzene Micro C. Bike looks much cleaner without the wire for the wheel sensor. Also grabbed the Topeak under seat bag and Blackman MP-3 tire pump for the Quick 1. Not sure if the pump will stay on the left side or get flipped to the right side. Now to get an extra tube for those longer rides.

I finally had decent weather for a 45 minute ride. I love the fenders and did not have any problem with rubbing or vibrations during the entire ride, even with 20 mph winds. I also appreciate the upgraded tires on surface streets. The bike is not as nimble or as fast as it was with the Schwalbe Spicer K-Guards but I'll take the improved ride and additional durability any day. I did not use the Lezyne GPS as I have not made time to set it up so I will report in when that is configured. I'm really happy with this bike as it sits so why am I dreaming of a 105 crankset to replace the FSA Omega that came on the bike? Because I can't leave things alone.

I recommend the crank upgrade - it was on my upgrade list almost immediately

it will perform better and will drop some weight

my original plan was to upgrade to the 105 FC-5800 crank - but was unable to find one (NOS 170mm 50/34t) - but eventually / finally did find a NOS Ultegra FC-6800 crank

both cranks are simple replacements on the 2018 Quick 1 Disc and if you stick with the same chainring sizes the front derailleur should require little to no adjustments

can use the same bottom bracket for both cranks - SM-BBR60

The handlebar currently on the bike is a 670mm Cannondale C3 handlebar - was on the bike when I purchased it. I believe the specs for this bike state 640mm handlebar - but this handlebar measured 670mm.

I plan to replace the stem and handlebar in the near future. I have Cannondale C1 and C2 stems and a few handlebar options (including ENVE, Cannondale, Easton, etc). Still deciding on the handlebar / handlebar length - probably go with a length somewhere around 640 - 660 mm (?).

The seatpost and seat will also be replaced (with Thomson Masterpiece and WTB Volt).
