When I was commuting, 2.5 miles each way was my normal distance. I've been impressed with my Trek FX commuter bike, which I've used for 10 miles round trip (5 miles each way) for an entire winter (although there's been quite a maintenance bill associated). Trek FX has proven to be a popular commuter bike around here, and I've even thought about buying a second and using it for the summer bike.

I don't have a lot of experience with gravel bikes but I've seen people say they really like them for winter cycling. So can I suggest doing a "search threads" and seeing what people have said in the recent past. And someone else will undoubtedly be replying to this post.

Same here. Contemplating about getting a Priority Continuum bike with studded tires for the Winter months. Less maintenance and cleaning play a role in my decision as well.

They are expensive, but for me, I wouldn't even think about it most days without my velomobile. Fully enclosed drive train keeps the salt off it. It's ~15-20F warmer than ambient when I get warmed up, three wheels, so I can't tip, and it's fun to boot (although not so much when slogging through fresh snow).

A Fixie makes total sense for winter riding. Where I'm at, Edmonton, I use my aluminium frame with a Shimano Nexus hub and it tends to freeze in one gear, thankfully in a mid range one.

I’ve commuted throughout the year in the past but find it hard to work up much enthusiasm for a rideout when it’s cold and wet. Respect to those who cycle in snow 🥶!

So, I grew up road riding in Florida. There may have been 3 weeks in the whole year combined when I didn't ride. Moved to east Tennessee 12 years ago and just picked up road cycling this year. Bought a used Litespeed Tuscany, lost 45 lbs and want more. I have ridden 1375 miles since March. I would like to ride was long as it's above about 40-45. But, I don't have anything other than short sleeve jersey and shorts. I am definitely looking to add longsleeve jersey and maybe a jacket, leggings and full gloves. Anything better than another brand wise or is it you get what you pay for?

We got some snow on Christmas, so I took a short spin around town to enjoy the powder and silence. I typically ride in winter, preferring country, dirt roads— especially if snowy— but we don’t get a lot of snow piling up here, and we plow and salt pretty aggressively, so paved roads are usually pretty clear, too.

Rule of thumb in Minnesota, when the news stops reporting about F150s going through the ice ... then it's safe to go on the ice For reference, earlier this week on Lake Minnetonka - it's been a mild winter and the lake ice is not ready.

Here's an annual race on Lake Minnetonka - the year of this video, I think we had a high temp of 5F.

I'm in Illinois, but I have always used the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources General Ice Thickness Guidelines for (relative) safety!

I’m hoping the Ardents are a good tire for riding in fall leaves, winter slush and early spring muck.
After just 2 rides I think I seriously think I need to drop the PSI or go tubeless. It's just too mucky or icy, depending on the day. I'm still feeling out the new tires. I got some cheap fenders off Amazon and they're keeping me mostly muck free.

PS: I took off that chain guide. Not recommended.

I love riding in winter. The cold wind and amazing snowy trails are the best part of riding in winter. Also I have great workout during these times.

Not to mention you usually "own" the trails since not many souls are around.

In the deep South, it gets cool enough that I may not ride a road bike as often, turning to my Montague for a good workout without as much wind.
But... it doesn't snow often, and the temps really don't stay very low or for long.
Building a franken-Bianchi Ocelot with drop bars, oughta make a fabulous sloppy weather bike.
Just hangin' some parts on it in this pic, will update in one of my threads when finished.

Putting on the clothes takes a while, and then when you are almost done you can't find your keys or something is missing and you start overheating.
