Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I always thought I would like to do at least a part of the Great Divide trail.

That's funny. One time I rented a car and drove to Tucson and on the return trip my back hurt and I was extremely uncomfortable for hours. I told Mrs John that 8 hours on the bike was a lot easier than 8 hours in that car.

My limit for driving is about 4 hours. More than that, and I'll fly.

I've only driven to a destination outside of Texas once in the last 10-15 years, and that was last summer when I bought a bike in Oklahoma. And, that was only about 3 hours away.

I have recently done a couple of Austin and back or College Station and back trips in one day that resulted in about 6 to 7 hours in the car, but those would be half in the morning and half at night, not six hours continuously.

At work, I am aware of 5 people who have gotten vaccinated recently. We have about 60 people in the company. I know of one other who is considering it and one who was scheduled to get it but got covid before the appointment.

A member of my road club did it solo 3 times. This was several years ago and he said it cost him about $30K each time. The first time he DNF'ed due to hyponatremia but the second effort he became the first finisher over 60 and the third he became the first over 65.

It's not racing like you think, they don't carry high average speeds or draft in lines or any of the usual road race stuff. It's very dependent on sleep deprivation and just staying on the bike for as many hours as you can stand. Lots of riders drop out. Some have neck issues, (Shermer's Neck). Some fall asleep on the bike.

Someone else I know did it as a 2 man team and it turned into a fiasco. There was fighting among the support crew and people dropped out and flew home and most of them weren't friends after the race.

30k is a lot of money. Other than gas, food, car, lodging and spare parts what other cost is there?

It's a race. You don't get lodging. The follow car is likely an RV.

This is true. The worst are scalp wounds from things like chairs.

When I was an intern rotating through the ER, the best thing that could happen was picking up the chart for a nice, clean, BIG, laceration to sew up. It could keep you out of the rotation, sitting down in a quiet room for a long time with someone not desperately ill. One particularly terrible night with a full moon, I got an unfortunate young woman with borderline personality disorder who had slashed up both arms with a razor blade. To give you some idea of how bad that year and that rotation were, I was so happy I nearly cried.

Back roads, good hotels with actual beds, good food and beer every night, and the option to not ride some days. Maybe ride for two hours some days and sleep in the car/van on the way to the next hotel. Days off the bike, just wandering around some nice towns. Skipping Nebraska, because riding across Nebraska would take forever and feel like Hell.

How are you going to manage the necessary 30mph tailwinds the entire time?

Fair enough.

But, all the crooked lawyers I know are getting the vaccine. Gotta make sure we survive so we can pursue all the lawsuits.

On the RAAM web page they estimate the minimum @ $20k.
You use 2 vehicles, an RV and a van, which usually are rented and driven across the country and back. In LOP's example it says 15mpg average. You can count on substantially less than that, especially going east during the race.
You have to feed the crew and put them up in motels if time permits.
Is the crew all volunteer? Does everyone, including the racer, have time off work paid?

$25 X 6 X 14 = $2,100. That's if you can fee each person for $25/day.

Yep, that's 2007 estimates. These days I'd guess $10 breakfast, $17 dinner. I'd hope for crew that can get by on sandwiches they make themselves for lunch, maybe $4 apiece. so $31 ish.
