1"quill options
So I got my buddies old Steelman Stage Race frameset back and he is 30 years older now so he will need some rise to his stem. What are the brands/options now for a non-custom stem? TIG or forged aluminum. Nothing fancy or Ti. 26.0 bar dia.

I like the 90 degree velo orange quill as well. About the same price range, but for a larger bar, I guess.

A Nitto Technomic II is a 90 degree stem. Gives 17 degrees of rise. Sakae also made one.

The 3 questions to answer are:
1. How much rise is needed?
1a. Reach? Not all the stems come in a wide range of reaches; also inventory can be tight these days.
2. Do you care whether it's a horizontal "7" stem or up-angled?
3. If you're open to a 31.8mm stem w/shim, there's lots more to choose from. I'm not a shim fan, but to each his own.
4. Not a Q but a caution: beware if stuffing a _very_ tall stem into a small bike/head tube. Head tubes are butted at the bottom, stem and/or wedge can get stuck if jammed down too far.
Nitto is at the top of my heap, and if you cruise through the Nitto section of Ben's Cycle, you'll find at least 5 stems that are native 26.0mm and have more rise than the average stem. They do start at fancy/$200+ for the lugged stem, but they go down to $50 or for the starter Technomics. From the top, they go: Lugged/Pearl/Technomic Deluxe Tall/Technomic Dlx Short/Technomic/Dynamic.

There used to be a tig-welded Nitto UI-xx stem, can't recall the numbers, similar to the current UI-12, but 26.0mm and no removable faceplate. Slightly longer quill, and upward angle. Nice if you can fine 'em used.
I'm not sure what's happening with the Nitto Dynamic stem. The older/original had a not very tall quill, but a +angle, so you got a little more height than usual, but not a lot. These stems had a bottom/45-degree-ish bar clamp bolt. Now it looks like there's a "New Dynamic," with a horizontal top, maybe longer quill?I dunno, it confuses me and I'm tired, so no links on this. Ben's shows the older/original, newer one will pop up with a search.
Once you leave NittoLand, you're mostly in the world of Taiwanese tig'd stems. Nothing at all wrong with that/them, but not quite the same quality level as Nitto imho. This is also a world increasingly dominated by 31.8mm stems, so that question of whether shimming a 31.8 works or not comes in.
Velo Orange has a Gran Compe Ene stem in 26.0, which might be a Japanese stem. Also a tig'd Grand Cru, and a Quill, all in 26.0. The 2 GC stems are horizontal/"7" stems, the Quill has a rise.
