This was a pretty good idea!

So I commute on an old rigid mountain bike with slicks, a rack, and pannier. The rack is an old Blackburn unit we’ve all seen a bazillion times, and it works pretty good for me. But I have some Lone Peak panniers that want to flop into the wheel. I decided it needed an extra support, so I snagged some 3/8” OD tubing and went to town with a tubing bender. Witness the results, of which I’m quite pleased:

I had to drill out the tubing to 5/16” ID to fit over the strut ends, and it was a tight fit (requiring the aid of a rubber mallet), but it is solid and rattle free. Add a few stainless hose clamps (I could probably get away with only one, really) and Bob’s yer uncle!

Im super excited at how this turned out!

Bravo! One thing - you better polish off those sharpie marks before a field engineer sees them and rejects the whole thing. (It's a nuke thing)

I don't know what kind of bender it was; it was my neighbor's, done under his advice. Otherwise it would've been much less aesthetically pleasing for sure....

And yes, those sharpie marks will disappear shortly. Thanks for the comments!

I'd pop into a motorcycle repair or welding shop and ask how much to drop a few weld beads on it.

I'd probably put a few dabs of jb weld or metal epoxy on there just to make things a bit more secure. Once it hardens, it'll be most of the way to a weld and you can file/sand it and paint it or whatnot if needed.

Does aluminum weld itself to stainless as well as it does to other steels?
