Ugh that's bummer. I don't think anything relevant happened until mikuni pass. Well unexpected that is - Tratnik towed the peloton and Geraint crashed. I was excited to see the gap out to 20 minutes for quite awhile, with Nic Dlamini in the breakaway. Would've been cool to see the break take it.

Wow, the women's race really highlights the role of the race radio. The Dutch women thought that the break had been caught, and Van Vleuten celebrated gold as she crossed the line in second place.

They also all completely underestimated Anna Kiesenhofer and and more than just the communication there were things contributing to the result. Small peloton, the Dutch women didn't take the break seriously and let it get out far enough to launch someone, and it seems like a lot of the chasing group didn't feel motivated enough to work until it was too late.

It's a pretty cool story and she really showed guts with a strong 40km TT to finish with no team at all. She is a PHD in mathmatics and has a job, is completely self trained (nutrition, everything). She was gasping for air after the finish line...she really let it all hang out for a long time.

That was thoroughly enjoyable she showed great courage.

Kind of makes you wish for no commas during the major tours.

I was thinking the Dutch woman had no idea when she crossed the line and that turned out to be the case.

She's my new hero

"Now I‘m old, I’m 30, and I started to realise that all those people who say they know, they actually don’t know. Many of them don’t know, and especially those who say that they know, don’t know, because those who do know say that they don’t know."
I may put that in my signature file.

It's a great line. Her win is just about the highlight of the Olympics so far for me.

Incredible, and Vos claims she knew Anna was still out front? I watched LR comment on the race then went back and watched that final 40km-ish. There's a whole narrative going on about race radios which is bogus - van vlueten was out front between the break and peloton for over 20km? Like what was that?

I mean yeah race radios would've cleared up alot, but VV was not going to bridge 7 minutes. Plus the country's with large teams were just looking at each other, so arrogant to think they didn't have to worry about the break. This almost happened with the men's race, but for reasons I don't understand (as a selfish person) Jan Tratnik just decided to sacrifice himself infront of the whole world to reel it back.

Then that final 20km it was crazy to watch (after I knew what happened) because you saw zero cooperation. Anna was riding super hard but the final 6ish km you could see her fatiguing based on her speed. But wildly you'd see the attackers and peloton speed surge - but then drop back!!??

This was the result I was hoping for - and Anna's comments are poignant. Nothing is more pure then the Privateer!

Uh, he was riding for Pogacar and Roglic? He's not that well-known and nobody, including him, likely thought that he had much of a chance for a medal. If his effort had brought gold to Slovenia, that would have given him some pretty good reflected light.

Poor MVP. He would have been better off staying with the Tour. Pidcock was a beast.

Anybody got a link to a free replay of the men's road race? Olympic Committee seems to have done a good job of getting Youtube not to allow anybody to post a recording.

If you thought Pidcock was a beast, Jolanda Neff and her team were monsters. She dropped everyone like flies.
And where was Courtney? Nowhere. The US riders looked pathetic.

Weird. Hopefully we'll see redemption with Dygert, Craddock and McNulty. People thinking McNulty has a real podium chance. Craddock hopefully in top ten - he can surprise and should be fresh.

Yes he was riding for the two "better" country men, but he's fairly accomplished and beat Pogacar at the Slovenia national ITT. If Tratnik had found himself in the break ... Would've been crazy! Seeing as Pogacar is just off three hard weeks and Roglic was banged around a bit.

Shame Tratnik not riding the ITT - Roglic is unknown at this point and not over whelmingly superior to others based on previous results against McNulty, Uran on this parcour.

Meanwhile on the BMX course, an official grew the Olympic movement by walking out in front of Dutch rider Niek Kimmann's practice run.

More like what the Dutch? They are having all kinds of weird little problems. Kimmann has a sore knee from the collision but will race.

It's not just the Dutch causing these problems, though they do seem to have a few issues with their teams and communication.

The Olympics organizers have made a few pretty large blunders. There was the boat that was in the way during the start of the triathlon, the official crossing the BMX track while people were practicing, and what MinnMan posted about Van der Breggen being pulled off of her bike by the organizers. Those are just the three biggest errors I know of caused by the organizers.

Not good at all and makes the organizers look pretty bad imo.

I didn't even think of including triathlon here. I guess I wasn't looking for it because it wasn't under the cycling category on the IOC website. Next time in 2024... Did I miss anything else with pedals?

Time trials tonight.

It's almost like the Japanese nation isn't with it's heart in it. Let's face it, these arer just lousy Olympics with Japan just fulfilling it's obligation rather then showing itself off to the rest of the world like host nations are supposed to do. I feel these things are just symptoms of a wrong situation.

Maybe it's because the Dutch think they can ride their bike anywhere, but contrary to the BMX-incident Van der Breggen claims her incident wasn't really one and a mosquito was made into an elephant, she was stopped by an official and her bike fell, she didn't. But there are a lot of organizational issues outside the events and getting to the events. The rowers had 3 positive covidtests in their team/staff and the whole team had to go in isolation and it took days before they got permission to open a window. The other competitors weren't being nice either, but they responded with gold, 2x silver and 1 bronze. Still it's not how Olympics should be.
