Hi folks,

I don’t know if this is the right place to post this, but will start here.

What appears to be a quality frameset was dropped off at our local co-op a couple of days ago. Given its condition and the possibility that it may have been stolen, they ran the serial number, WW0150941, on the barcode thru the western states data base, but it wasn’t listed. It was then turned over to me for further assessment.

Here’s what I found. Over the original paint which appears to be metallic silver with blue graphics is two coats sloppy rattle can paint. First was white & second brown. There are a lot of stickers over all of this.

This large steel frame has a 1” threadless steerer & headset. I couldn’t read the brand. Fork is uni-crown. I couldn’t decipher any labels on the dropouts. The only other components on it were some heavy, clunky dual pivot side pull calipers w/o labels, but stamped “451AG006”, a Sora triple CS with only a 50t ring, Surly Singleater tensioner & a Bontrager stem cap. There was also another set of numbers on the bottom bracket, 34231082 TBI 1311. When cleaning it up, I found a sticker at the bottom of the DT which said “Reynolds 853 Main Tubes”. Opposite of it on the ST was another sticker saying ”Hand Made in the USA”. Based on this info and The Bontrager cap, started researching Treks without success. Moved on to Specialized which had even less info.

If this is a quality frameset, we would like to find a home for it.

Any leads, references or suggestions as to its identity, would be greatly appreciated.

I was thinking Lemond as well.

You should be able to tell if it's a Lemond by the geometry - long top tube because of the slack seat tube angle. 1" threadless steerer puts it around 2000 I think.

Other than Lemond, some 853 bikes from that time that might have been made in the USA are the Schwinn Peloton and Jamis Eclipse. Fuji Roubaix was also 853 but probably not made in USA?

It appears that this is a 2002 Lemond Nevada City model. The catalog shows it with Sora components and the threadless steerer/headset.
The co-op is closed until Wednesday. I'll try to find out what they would like to do with it. Bikes like this don't fit in their business plan or their customer base. I'd like to keep it out of the recycle bin if possible. Scrap steel doesn't have much value.
