Thinking of another potential and last road bike project

Good Evening Everyone

I am starting to think of getting another potential fourth and last road bike but this one will be on carbon wheels and with a mix of dura ace 7700/7800. As usual Reynolds and if not Dedacciai frame. Not sure if I will go with STIs or not, wheels will be with either Vision Metron 81 TL or Zipp 60 Carbon Clincher or Prime Primavera 85 or 60 or Reynolds AR80X or Mavic Cosmic SLR LTD , tires will be continental grand prix 4 season, flite or mythos saddle but this is just a project, I am thinking about after my two projects will be finished.

Very best regards and stay safe

Georges

I'm about 25 bikes past my "last road bike project"! Good luck with that, LOL!

When I say the last, it will be the last trust me. I am building up my last mountain bike and will buy spare parts before they won't be easy to find. Same approach will be used with my road bikes. I value rare and uncommon frames, then for the rest of components. I know what I will choose.

Jamesdak, I'm like you in that I keep telling myself "This is the last and final one," and then a bug gets up my butt and I start thinking about it and end up with another one! I have designed and built 5 frames and swore off building another one three or so years ago, and guess what I have been obsessing about for the past week? Building another frame!

If I were able to find a 1982-83 Miyata Ridgerunner in 21" size I'd have it in my quiver and that for sure would be the very last one. Seriously.

Sounds in denial, but oh well, so was Steven Seagal when they told him that he wasn't a great actor.

TiHabanero, send me a pm. I'm aware of a minty Ridge Runner that appears to be an 83, the non-lugged version & looks like a 21" from the photos I've seen of the bike.

I was looking for carbon wheels and found the ones that I was looking for at a bargain price , those are 23 years old , yes 23 years old. My dream wheels were the Mavic Cosmic Carbone Wheels 1st genberation clincher wheels, this one is very first generation of them for clinchers and in good condition. Back then Mavic had nice aluminium hubs and the spokes and part of the rim were in aluminium. In the latest Cosmic Carbon variants I have often seen for sale on ebay had broken carbon rims or spokes and the hubs weren't as nicely designed.I will give them to my back tech for a check and will install on them a slime smart tubes and conti grandprix 4seasons in 700*23 or 700*25+shimano dura ace 7800/7900 cassette

Next is finding a very unusual frame in reynolds or dedacciai steel in exceptional condition in size 56-57

Finally bought the frame for my very last project, this one is the last and final bike.Saw many overpriced Cinellis with SLX tubing, many bad condition Lemonds Reynolds 853 frames with rusted bottom brackets and damaged paint, the Tommasini Tecno Extra with the Nemo tubing, the Bottechia Nos Legendaria with the Spirit Tubing, a Pegoretti in average condition, one nice Cinelli with the Neuron Tubing and a Tig welded Torelli but I didn't buy them because their initial cost +import duties + shipping would make things hard for me financially. I found a very rare and uncomon Italian frame ,a Vetta Team fillet brazed made with the high quality Deda ZR01 tubing in truely exceptional condition without ruining mysel financially. Totalweight of frame+ fork is 2.5kilos which isvery good

The stem for the Vetta is an ITM Goccia like onthe CT Wallis but 130mm, bar will be a cassic ITM like on the CT Wallis, saddle will be a Yellow flite, seat post will be a Dura Ace one, front derailleur will be Dura Ace 7800, brakes will be Dura Ace 7800 about crank I have to think about it.

Since the bike has a mega tube it will have Dura Ace cable guides and SL 7800 Shifters

An for more personalisation yellow sl 7800 Dura Ace hoods

And of course a new old stock RD 7800 derailleur

Does Vetta make their own frames or contract out I wonder. That could easily be a Fondriest, Scapin or Casati (those just hit me as I looked at the frame).

Yes they do since 1947, link to vetta online 2022 catalog. In the past they made frames with OriaTubing, since late 1990's they use exclusively Dedacciai or Columbus
Some Vettas for sale on ebay:
Vetta Oval Oria Steel Frame , Vetta Summit 7020 Oria Tubing, Vetta Aero Oria 7020 Frame , Vetta Summit Columbus MS , VettaTaverna made by Cinelli with Campy Athena

Fondriest was using brazing with lugs then fillet brazing and thenswitched to basic TIG welding for economical reasons . Scapin isn't building race bikes anymore ,like Fondriest using brazing with lugs then fillet brazing and then switched to basic TIG welding for economical reasons.Casati still makes steel fillet brazed frames with Expresso in Columbus Spirit and XCR Casati Espresso Back then Casati made the Pietro with ColumbusSL.

That’s why I often take chances on buying from eBay Europe. I’ve gotten some great gems cheaply. Some that probably never made it here.

I am glad you found those Cosmic Carbones instead of going with your original idea of running modern all-black carbon wheels.

Looking forward to the build. Neat frame with nice details, nice workmanship. Like the adjusters on the vertical dropouts. Sorta like a holdover from horizontal DO days that stayed around a while; old traditions die hard.

Of course I’ll never complain about the Dura Ace. Try for a 7700 crank. If you get one that’s a little worn, decals are available.

+1 if you run 700 x 23 tires!

I get the last bike thing. My Cinelli is my last road bike. It’s been that way since 2002.

More other parts were bought for the vetta:
FD 7800

BR 7800

SP 7400

BB7700 because more durable and better engineered than BB7800 and 7900

ST Carbon cranks with octalink

Vetta Tape
