Attachment of rear derailleur to hangar

I am a bit puzzled. The rear derailleur has 2 protrusions near the attachment bolt. These protrusions are to "lock" onto the "comma" part of the hanger.

My question ‐ should the "comma" sit between the 2 protusions, or it should rest only on one of them?
If it rests on one of them, the derailleur cage will be raised a bit higher.

What should the right way?

That's a pretty poor description. You're gonna need to make a few posts and then put a photo up.

It should rest on the first protrusion, the one that sets the derailleur furthest back. Common area of confusion. No worries if you get it wrong.

Thank you.
I was confused because it looks logical to hv the tip of the "comma" of the hanger to be between the 2 protrusions on the rear derailleur.
I am using a new Shimano Ultegra rear derailleur.

Many of the new Shimano Derailleurs are "Direct Mount" compatible. Mainly for certain MTBs. So, the mount on the derailleur end has two bars.

You need a derailleur mount to work with standard derailleur hangers.

I would expect that derailleur mount to come standard with Ultegra derailleurs, but perhaps it is an option.

It is a new/recent Shimano Ultegra rear derailleur. It has two 4-5mm protrusions on the back side of the derailleur where the hanger is to be attached & tightened onto.

For most bikes with ordinary derailleur hangers, you'll need this part in red.

I'm not quite sure what the direct mount hanger looks like.

Ok, so this is what the direct mount hanger looks like, likely with an offset to match the derailleur.

BF have a tendency of making a simple thing rather complicated. Your question was reasonable and very straight forward. Mount it with the 1st protrusion and go for a ride, no need for pictures, derailleur model number, or direct mounts. It will only be going downhill from here.
