New derailleur/hanger/chain maiden voyage. They worked great, but the front derailleur dropped the chain once. That can likely be adjusted, and it could've been much worse. Happy to get a ride in before it starts raining again. And my tubeless tire sealant did its job. About 9 miles in today, I felt some liquid hit my leg, and I figured I’d ridden through some odd substance, not unusual in that part of town. But it didn’t evaporate, and besides me it got all over the bike, too. I figured I’d just have some more cleaning to do when I got home, but after I showered, I noticed that white stuff was rubbery and didn’t wash off, like…latex. Checked my back tire and yup, it was appreciably softer, but still holding air. Maybe I should run at lower pressures, today was one of my fastest average mph rides I’ve ever done, and I don’t think I’ve lost any weight lately.

Must be contagious. My rides lately have been cold, in the 20's. So I was really looking forward to a warm ride tonight (55F!). But as soon as I started rolling I heard rubbing. Found a broken spoke in the rear. Weird, it was fine when I got home from my ride Wednesday night. I'm due for service, but was planning to wait for a real cold spell or a snow storm so I wouldn't lose any riding time.
My neighbor at the bottom of the hill came out to see if I had a problem, and he told me that owl I almost collided with a couple of weeks ago hangs out in the trees in his yard and on a nearby telephone pole. Will be breaking out the big lens and hopefully can get a good photo soon.

Strava says I did 2,764 miles last year, which is 230.3 miles per month. I'm going try to outdo that every month, starting with this one, goal is 250 miles. I would've had a great start to it today, but 11 miles in to what was supposed to be a metric century, my chain dropped, somehow managed to get tangled in the derailleur (and break it), then just for good measure, break a spoke, which pushed its nipple through the rim tape and flatten the (tubeless) tire. Bonus: the chain got seriously jammed between the crank and the chainring (I managed to extricate it, but my near-pristine Aethos is well-scratched now). I learned that a replacement SRAM Force AXS eTap rear derailleur is just north of $300 (on sale), and I need a new derailleur hanger (another $17.50), and it was time for a new chain ($37), plus $27 to replace the spoke and true the wheel. Happy freakin' New Year. I did learn that re-mounting a tubeless tire is much, much messier when there's already sealant in the tire. On the positive side, my driveway will likely never leak. On the more positive side, my new gravel bike is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so I may not be too sad about my Aethos' being out of commission for a few days. On the negative side, it's supposed to rain tomorrow.

Dropped the bike off at the shop today to get the spoke fixed and a tuneup. They told me my chain was also worn (about 2,500 miles), which surprised me. I thought they would go a lot longer. They said my cassette looks a bit worn too, it may skip with the new chain. And that I should change the chain every 1,000 miles or so.
I have the chain wear tool, I just thought it was way early so I had not used it. But now that I think about it, I did start to get the occasional missed shift in the last couple of months. Must be related. Lesson learned.
Bike should be done by Tuesday.

My Aethos is quite honestly the best bike I’ve ever ridden. I suppose I can’t be unbiased, but really, I’ve never ridden a bike that wants to go as fast as that one does, while at the same time making me want to just ride all day.. It’s white and I nicknamed it White Lightning. It’s a custom build (for somebody else) on a (non-S-Works, i.e., “regular Specialized”) Aethos Pro frame, with the SRAM AXS Force groupset and Boyd Altamont Lite wheelset. I bought it used from The Pro’s Closet, and even used, it was just shy of 9 kilobucks, so yeah, tweren’t cheap, but I don’t have all that many years left to ride, so I thought I’d get myself a nice bike to do it with (I later applied that same logic and that I needed a top-notch mountain bike, then a top-notch gravel bike; I think I’m done now). No regrets whatsoever, and even when I took it into a Specialized dealer recently, they had to look closely before figuring out it was a Specialized, I guess they’re used to seeing the giant logos on the down tube. I don’t think you’d go wrong with one of your own.

Thanks for the info, that’s a pretty great review. Congrats on the newly acquired bikes. I justify my nonsense to the wife explaining these are medical devices allowing me to age gracefully to old age with her. Did a test ride the Aethos right after Christmas and loved the ride, it helped that guy at the shop had the exact same bike and was gushing about it. Have been looking at it on Specialized website everyday since. Using your logic of not getting any younger I said screw it and just ordered it this morning! Should be ready for pickup in a week or so. Can’t wait to tell the wife of our good fortune.

Well...I'm going to fall short for the month. I had laser surgery a couple of weeks ago for a torn retina.
I had some additional symptoms last weekend so I bumped up my follow up visit a few days and went back in this past Monday. Partially detached retina in a slightly different area. Surgery on Tuesday AM. The surgeon said I could probably ride okay immediately with the procedure that was used, but out of an abundance of caution I asked if it wouldn't be better to stay off the bike and trainer until my follow up visit next Tuesday. He agreed. So I might sneak in a ride next Tuesday and or Wednesday or I might not. We're headed for England next Wednesday afternoon, so I'll have to be off the bike until the middle of February any way.
The weird vision in the affected eye would make riding on the road annoying if not ill-advised any way. Hopefully the eyesight gets better by then. If not it sounds like I have to wait an additional month or so before they remove the oil bubble they installed. Lots of fun.
