I have a Conti GP 5000 that started fraying at the sidewall after maybe 1 year of use. The treads were barely worn. And this bike was always parked indoors. So German manufacturing certainly doesn't guarantee anything.
Frankly I think bike tires are just made to a lower quality than car tires in general.

I bought some Conti Urban Contacts recently. I have high praise for them. Because of this thread, I just went and looked at the country of manufacture. China. Oh well, I'll never buy them again.

Do you know anyone from India? Have you been there? Are you basing any of your bias on any actual knowledge?

Do you understand the work ethic of those in India?

Damn! You guys are so literal! You wouldn’t know exaggerating for effect if it hit you with a ten-foot top tube•*

*For those too dense to get it— yes, I know there’s no such thing as a ten-foot top tube.**

**Yes, I know about the tandem from 100 years ago that carried 10 riders and had top tube that was at least that long.***

***100 years ago was just a guess. I don’t have the magazine where I saw it in front of me.

Seriously, some of you guys need to divert some of the funds you spend on bikes and try to buy a sense of humor. Try eBay.

Uhm, the point isn't that I'm being literal. The point is you have nothing to back up your bias unless you can answer with some facts to back up your implication that a worker from India cannot produce a quality product, because they can't be bothered due to a perceived low wage.

Try again.

Actually Continental Bicycle Tires have been made in several different countries for a long time. I think only a few specific models are actually made in Germany. I don't see that it matters where the tires are made as long as Continental is keeping the manufacturing standards and quality control at the proper levels.

I wouldn't put much into anecdotal reports of bad tires. It happens everywhere for every manufacturer. Even the Continental plants in Germany. When they find out there's been a bad run that somehow got past the quality control inspectors, then they fix the issue and continue to make good tires.

Yeah. I got a set of Ortlieb panniers back in 2011. Made in Germany. Hardly considered cheap. The cinch strap on one of them failed after my first tour with them. It was only 3 days long.

Contacted the highly respected retailer. He told me that Ortlieb had had some quality control problems for a bit but they had been corrected. Sent me a replacement bag before I returned the defective one because I had a longer tour coming up soon.

So that sort of thing can happen even in Germany.

Now trying to play the victim is pretty pathetic. You insulted a nation of 1.5 billion people which you obviously do not have any experience with. Your comment was extremely arrogant and uniformed.

Glad to know you speak for 1.5 billion people. Please take a bow.

And get a sense of humor. I hear you can get a cheap, well-made one from India.

I have a set of Continental Contact Plus 700 x 32 which are made in India. They are very good tires, no problems at all. Very puncture resistant and very durable. The only negative about them is that they are hard to install or remove. I always need to use two tires levers for those tires.

I don't see any issues with Conti tires, certainly yes their stuff made in Germany is going to be the best but I highly doubt they are going to make crappy tires wherever that is. Knowing Amazon I know a lot of those reviews are utter garbage sometimes you can find some good ones but I wouldn't look to Amazon for anything but a 3rd tier billionaire with still way too much money.

Perhaps some of us don't find ignorance and racism humorous.

And it is ignorance. You obviously do not understand modern multinational manufacturing.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry. I’ve had great service in recent years from Continental tires made in Germany, India and China and I don’t have any qualms about buying any of them again.

I've had excellent experience with my Schwalbe tires made in Indonesia.

But somehow, given your evident prejudices, you probably wouldn't go for those either - if you are even able to realize that India and Indonesia aren't the same country. 🙄
