Nice score, Citybikes probably has something to at least hold you over to get started until you can find a more appropriate one.

I’d probably use a carbon fork with a 10 speed modern build. But still be on the lookout for the correct fork.

Lattz, what kind of stem is that? It would look great on my dark green Waterford.

Thanks,

Colnago Fork

Hold on, help is on the way.... $60.00 plus ~ $20.00 Shipping... Continental US Only

A photo of the drive side of the whole frame would be helpful.Your frame appears to be a 1980 or 1981 Colnago Super and looks to be 56cm or 57cm Center to Top:

From VeloRetro Colnago Timeline: Velo-Retro: Colnago Super Timeline

1980
- Fluted seat stay caps engraved COLNAGO and straight seat stays (no longer biconical shape)
- Brake bridge with square boss for recessed brake bolt

1981
- Chain stay bridge is spool shape (no longer tube)
- Chain stays stamped COLNAGO on sides, long stiffening flutes inner-side of chain stays and right chain stay chromed

Your frame would have originally had a semi-sloping crown like this:

I sold this one back in May. Finding a real 40+ year old Colnago fork isn't going to be easy plus it's going to cost a bundle. In 1983 Colnago switched to a sloping crown which is what I have access to.

I sold my 1983 Colnago Super a few months back. The chrome on the original fork had some corrosion. I got an NOS factory replacement fork. I have access to the old fork and it's available from the new owner for a very reasonable price.

My 1983 56cm Super frame when I bought it in 2006. There was some surface rust on the fork crown and drive side fork blade from a speedometer.

It cleaned up a lot and passes the 10 foot test.

Here's how to measure your frame:

Better quality headsets for your frame and going to have a "stack height" of 38mm to 42mm.

BTW, to the heretics who suggested plastic death forks, I'll ride "carbon" when they pry my cold dead fingers off of my aluminum down tube shifters....

Great score , you will love the way it rides. I’ve had my ‘75 for almost 2 years and wore the tires out, and it isn’t the only bike I ride!

I’m confused

my research says it’s a 73 based on the 73 stamped on the derailleur side campy drop-out

i believe you though. The fact that you own One tells me you will know more about it.

I’ve never owned a Colnago before.

I can kick it with the best of them on Derosa and the subtle differences 1/2 year to another, I just don’t know Colnago.

Colnago Serial Numbers

Don't believe everything you read on the internet much of it is just opinions, check the documentation...

As I mentioned in my post above, it looks like you have a 1980 or 1981 Colnago Super frame.

Check out the Velo-Retro Colnago Super Timeline link: Velo-Retro: Colnago Super Timeline

This is the best source for dating Colnago Super frames from 1968 through 1986. It was compiled over a number of years buy A LOT of knowledgeable folks.

Serial numbers from the Velo-Retro Timeline:

"Serial numbering only started for Colnago on USA-bound bikes when the CPSC started requiring tracking, etc. West Coast Cycles was importing Colnago at the time and the serial numbers started for their product. There is still no way to determine manufacturing date by the numbers, except that they are 1979 or later...."

The numbers stamped into Colnago dropouts mean NOTHING because they are untraceable!!! I still have one of the 4 Colnagos I've owned and it has NO serial number.... The others....

From the late 60's on a lot of importers and sellers brought Colnagos into the US. They're all are long gone. Those frames with traceable serial numbers from 1979 on would depend on 40 year old records if they could be found which is highly unlikely!

Good luck finding a fork...

Check my next message below.

Late 80's Colnago Fork

Nice fork at a good price but....

It's from a late 80's frame and it will probably barely clear a 700c x 25mm tire and may affect the handling.

Here's a similar fork on my late 80's Colnago with a 700c x 23mm tire.

The 1983 fork offered above will easily clear 700c x 28mm tires and maybe even 700c x 32mm.

PS: what happened to the original fork??? I'm suspicious anytime I see a frame being sold without a fork. Was it in a front ender or otherwise get damaged? Top and down tubes on the OP's frame look good so that's probably not an issue.

When carbon fiber after market forks hit the market a lot of original steel forks were discarded, misplaced, lost or left at the LBS that did the work.... I'll keep the rest of my opinions to myself.

@Robvolz - As Chas stated, the number on the DO is meaningless. I have 53 stamped on mine with the frame size 56.5 and the year 1983 (RD PAT 83) The NDS has "USA" stamped on it.

Killer deal. I love riding mine even though it is a too small.
