I’ve been off the bike all winter except for errands and a 10 mile spin in January. I’m pretty out of shape so during today’s short opening ride in Vermont with 1150 feet of climbing I felt every inch. In a good way. Keen-eyed observers may note my new dynamo lighting.

Beautiful December day here in Virginia with temps in the 40’s, strong breeze and blue skies. I bundled up in all my gear again, for what I hope, again, is the last time and took a local spin. I’d been having thoughts of selling my Merckx Pro and, per usual, to banish these impure thoughts, I took it out today. Stopped to watch a few minutes of UVA soccer.

First ride on this bike since late December last year. The salt has finally been mostly washed off the roads so I don't need to worry so much about keeping it clean.

Got out on the last day of winter for a couple hours in between chores. One of my usual routes in the Upper Valley.
The ride was bookended by Rattlesnake Lake and the end of the pavement on the Middle Fork Road.
There's some pretty scenery in between too..

Hark! The first Raleigh three-speeding of Spring. As per usual, a few drops of oil in the shifters, a few more in the hubs and on the indicator chains, some air in the tires, and off we went.

Did 32 road miles on my SLT yesterday and I was still pretty tired from that, so the fact that my ride today was going to have to deal with some stiff south winds made sure it was going to hurt a bit more than usual.
So naturally, I rode my fixed gear
Thankfully the bike path is finally clear of snow so I was able to shelter from the wind a bit behind the trees, but it's clear nobody from the county has been out here yet. 3 fallen trees in a 6 mile stretch!

Rode 48 miles north while the Illini were getting whipped by the Ramblers. Temps in the mid-60s, windy, but not too windy. Fueled by Chinese takeout.
Everything is still brown, except for the odd snowdrop or buttercup.
A few years back, they paved the jeep trail going down into "Ravine 7". Very nice and good for hill repeats. There's a small stream next to the road that drains into the lake.
Here's the structure supporting the outfall of the ravine. They redid these so fish can go upstream and spawn. Mostly Lake Chub and Suckers - some say trout, but I call B.S. - all the good fish are "on vacation".
Stopped on one of the bridges for a break - you can really see the freshly oiled chain glisten in the sun!

A longer ride out yesterday as sunshine and blue skies were forecast. No sign of it though as I left Weston eastbound through Locking, Banwell, Churchill, and Langford, before climbing onto the Mendips through Burrington, and by the time I got to the top I was missing my legwarmers.
From the top of Burrington I went over the Mendip plateau passing through Charterhouse, Priddy, and Green Ore, before descending through Oakhill and Leigh on Mendip. By the time I got to Nunney the weather had changed completely, and the promised blue skies and sun had appeared. I stopped briefly in Nunney by the castle for a drink before pushing on through Whatley and Mells, and found a stone gateway to stop for lunch just past Mells.
From there I joined the Colliers' Way, a trail along an old railway line into Radstock, then switched to the Greenway, another railway trail on the path of the former S&D line into Bath, going via the Two Tunnels route. For anyone interested in railway history by the way this stretch of line was the scene of the Radstock crash and the Coombe Down Tunnel accident.
Riding through Bath was great, much less traffic than usual possibly due to the Clean Air Zone that's just been introduced, so I went via The Circus and Royal Crescent before cutting through Royal Victoria Park and onto the Bristol and Bath path - yet another former railway line, although a heritage steam railway runs alongside the path for a few miles - which runs from Bath right into the centre of Bristol.
There was no sign of the weekend's trouble in Bristol, although there were more policemen about on the streets than normal. I went over Bristol Bridge and up past the Cathedral and College Green before dropping back to follow the harbourside to the Portway, and left Bristol over the Avon M5 Bridge, then heading through Pill, Easton in Gordano, Portbury, and Clapton in Gordano, finishing my ride in Clevedon just as darkness was falling.
