all of these concerns, when written, were in the context of "if we don't do something about this...". Often, adjustments were made. Article fails to take this into consideration.

In addition, it's probably better for us to be living thinking about the dangers and negative effects of our actions than blithely bouncing along doing whatever we want without regard for how anything else is affected. We have in fact seen in the past how well that goes... over-hunting of certain animals, over-deforestation, the use of heavily-polluting factories and cars. I'm not even going to go there with population.

I liked Michael Crichton. Not only did he write the movies “Westworld” and “Jurassic Park,” but he was a Harvard MD, and Salk Fellow. He had written for years about the use of fear as a tool of manipulation and diversion, and though he is often cast as right-wing character, he stands more fully on the grounds of objectivity and common sense, which are hard things to find nowadays.

Some say the big flaw in Jurassic Park is that scientists sophisticated enough to recreate dinosaurs using the method that they did would have known that using the DNA of west African tree frogs would result in some of the creatures spontaneously changing sex in a single sex environment, thereby resulting in unauthorized breeding.

I'm totally skeptical of everything, simply because humans like to have the sh*t scared out of them; combine this with the money-making operation that is the media and it's a perfect recipe for what we see today. BTW, that's NOT to say that the problems listed in the article are not real problems, but they should only be addressed with reason and science. Not by people with agendas.

I think everybody is too burnt out to worry about some fiery ball falling from the sky

Which brings us back to the dilemma: How should we plan for tomorrow?
Kate Sweeny, the psychologist who compared 2020 to a garbage fire, said optimism and pessimism are tricky elements of the human condition.
A bright outlook reduces stress and motivates individuals to bounce back when things go bad, though blind optimism – think gambling addicts – can lead to disaster. Pessimism softens disappointment, Sweeny said, but it could translate into debilitating stress.

The end of the world as we know it?
Nostradamus, a French dude, tried to predict the future in verse some 450 years ago. For 2022 he prophesied that "a great fire will fall from the sky" – interpreted by some soothsayers to mean an asteroid shower will destroy Earth.Which brings us back to the dilemma: How should we plan for tomorrow?

More shutdowns and quarantines on the way....

The virus can be deadly if it infects people. The World Health Organization says more than half of the confirmed 863 human cases it has tracked since 2003 proved fatal. Most strains or variants of avian flu, H5N1, are relatively difficult to transmit to people.

Massive New Bird Flu Outbreak Could Be 2022’s Deadly Pandemic
Israel’s National Security Council has assumed control of a massive bird flu outbreak in the Galilee, which scientists warn could become a “mass disaster” for humans.Over half a billion migrating birds pass through the area every year, heading for warm African winters or balmy European summers, making this a catastrophic location for a major bird flu outbreak—right at the nexus of global avian travel. The virus can be deadly if it infects people. Why bother starting this thread?
History never ends. I think referencing perspectives and predictions past help us relate and make comparisons to what we are currently passing through. From the beginning of this current debacle, and within about two weeks, I had an opinion developed based on intuition plus prior study of unpopular history, and since then that basis of understanding has been nothing but validated as the last two years have progressed.
I think Michael Crighton, including others, look at predicted future scenarios held onto and pervaded in the popular realm currently, then compare them to track records of similar predictions by similar institutions, and then laugh.
