Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has called "Be My Baby" the greatest pop recording ever produced.

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys estimates that he’s heard “Be My Baby,” by the Ronettes, more than 1,000 times. The very first listen, 50 years ago this month, still haunts him.

“I was driving and I had to pull over to the side of the road — it blew my mind,” Mr. Wilson said, repeating a story that has become something of a legend. “It was a shock.” Just 21 and already frustrated with his band’s basic surf music, he bought the single and set about deconstructing its arrangement and production.

“I started analyzing all the guitars, pianos, bass, drums and percussion,” he said by telephone. “Once I got all those learned, I knew how to produce records.”

I remember the music video with Eddie Money back in 1986.

Ronnie was fabulous and seemed to be having fun with celebrity guest appearances with other musicians during the past 20-30 years, including with ? and the Mysterians about 10-15 years ago. Even after her voice changed from age and smoking she could always do the "Oh-oh-oh-oh-ohhh."

As soon as I heard about her death I YouTubed her performance on Letterman with Eddie Money, which I saw the night it first aired. In re-watching it, she was as good as I remembered. Letterman and Paul Shaffer loved musicians and always tried to give them the best possible venue to strut their stuff (although the house band didn't always get the same sound as the original bands). What really caught my eye was the crafty camera setup to catch Ronnie's entrance perfectly on cue.

Jump ahead to the 16:12 mark for the 1986 show with Ronnie backing up Eddie Money on "Take Me Home Tonight." It's the best quality copy of that video I've found on YouTube.

And here's the 2010 show with Ronnie wiggling onstage to accompany the still amazing Rudy Martinez of ? and the Mysterians.

Ronnie was cool as hell. I liked some of her solo stuff, including her covers of the Ramones' "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow".

She later did an EP called She Talks To Rainbows with Joey Ramone that also has some killer cuts, including this Thunders cover.

Yup, She Talks to Rainbows has been on my jogging/walking playlist the past week. Ronnie did a lovely version of "Don't Worry, Baby," which Brian Wilson originally wrote with Ronnie Spector in mind. I don't recall whether he wrote it specifically for her but the collaboration never happened, or he was inspired by her to write a song in the Ronnie style. Either way, her version is terrific.

The story as reported on the radio a couple days ago (and I have no reason to not believe it, but also have not fact-checked) was that Brian was sick of the Beach Boys' basic 'surf' sound and when he heard the Phil Spector production, he tried to deconstruct it and really learn what was going on there. Thus, "Don't Worry Baby" was born. And yes, her version is great!
