I love those first couple of years of the Kent-made Raleighs. It was like they went overboard doing a "British" bike to make up for the fact that the bikes weren't made in Nottingham anymore. Every time I get one of those in for a fix and flip, I'm tempted to keep it. Fortunately, nothing that's come thru has been my size.

I think the '85 Raleighs were "Raleigh USA" and made in Taiwan. The Touring line went Portage (650B)-Kodiak (27")-Alyeska (27")-Wyoming (27")

The Portage is sweet. I love my Alyeska.

My 83 Univega Sportour that's going to get the" treatment". Will begin with some SR rando bars and aero Dia-compe levers. I just love this bike and the ride it gives !

Peugeot Vagabond ca. 1985 which I got last summer from fellow CVer mparker326. Maybe he already posted the bike on this thread, I haven't gone back through all 50 pages (yet)?


SX610 Simplex RD looks all metal but it ain't. There's still quite a bit of Delrin in there, underneath the shiny chrome. This is a part I got from fellow CVer Randyjawa after the original one died an ugly and brutal death in a tangle with a deadly rope/stick combination that was waiting in the deep trailside weeds for me one day. Also a big thanks to fellow CVer smontero for dropping the very clean correct Maillard dork disk on me, also having needed replaced from the same tangle.


Lovely bit of Stronglight here, which I like a lot better after replacing the middle 45T ring with a 39T from Spa Cycles. And stupid cheap at $19 (shipped!) from England. Also cheap: those notoriously crummy Kenda gumwalls that got their own thread a while back. They'll stay until the end of the winter and then be upgraded when I pull this bike back off the shelf for riding again. This is emphstically not one of my rain bikes.


1979 Brooks Pro, best seat in (or out of) the house. This one gets around. I've used it on at least five of my bikes.


Soma rack I got from fellow CVer Cobrabyte. There's usually a big ugly Jandd box on there that I took off for the photo. The muted grey rack goes well with the grey shifters on the downtube, which I'm probably going to get rid of because of their massive suckitude. Seriously, they are the worst I've ever used. If you tighten them up enough to hold a gear, they're nearly impossible to budge. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Nope on the Mafac cantis; they are Weinmanns.

Yes, original (AFAIK). Super low miles bike that I'm pretty sure came to me with original everything, except bar tape. Even have the original Peugeot branded tires with almost no wear. This is one of those oddball Canadian-built Pugs with English-threaded everything.

They're fine, though not spectacular. The only 'adjustment' I have done to them is hooking up the brake cable to the the straddle. I daresay they have the original 28-year-old pads on them (AFAIK) and would likely improve with a modern upgrade. At any rate, I've not ridden this bike with more than myself and 10 lbs of baggage yet, so I haven't really asked too much of them so far.

You might want to take 'em apart and post pix on the mechanic's forum.

Sounds like there's a washer missing or backwards or something.

That may not be a lug. That may be one of the Ritchey Faux lugs:

"Fake" Lugs
A small number of Ritchey frames were created with fake lugs. These "lugs" are created by hand as the bike was fillet brazed. The frame is intentionally given the appearance of a lugged frame, but is produced with by a much more time consuming process.As far as I know, this treatment only appears on the most expensive Ritchey model - the Annapurna.
Also note, that many bikes have a similar treatment at the top of the seat tube.
