The Trek 760 Appreciation Thread (770 and 170 included)
After thoroughly hijacking other member's threads when discussing the almighty Trek 760, it has been decided this iconic vintage American racer needs a separate thread for discussion. Share your pictures, rides, wrenching, ID'ing possible frames and any other thoughts concerning this Trek favorite.

A few quirks about my 760.....it has a frame with a 12/7/1984 braze date that under normal conditions would have been built in '85. Mine has '86 decals on a non-'86 paint. Also has pinstriping outlining the main lugs that appears to be with automated application. When first seeing the bike I thought it to be a 560 until a few weeks ago @JohnDThompson said it had a 760 frame when he saw the distinctive "trident" fork crown lug. It has also been documented that Trek's distinctive "through the stay" rear derailleur cable was standard on some models but not 760's. Mine has it. I have formulated no less than 3 scenarios to somehow attempt to explain all the mysteries but have resolved to let it go and fully enjoy Trek's contribution to a great professional grade racer.

This was mine (1984, frame built 10/83). 531c, not 531p as in the catalog.
All Suntour Superbe 7s including that character-building 12-21 freewheel. I didn't have the Sprint wheelset, so I sub'd in a NR set, tubie of course.

85 with modern drivetrain and replaced fork. Was out on rail trails with it today. Has a great ride. Soaks up the miles, yet shoots forward willingly with each pedal stroke. One of my favorite century bikes.

Anybody got an '83 760 out there? I hardly ever see that one. It's usually the '84's or '85's. I got a soft spot for them '83's with the contrasting head tube.

So, I couldnt help myself, just had to toss the racing wheels on it. For the curious minds, the Campy NR does clear the 28t cog but I wish it had a B screw to help with chain/shift timing a little bit. But then, I'm only going to give it a little ride this weekend.

Here are some pics of my '83 760. Bought the frame in 1984, had parts from a built-up Paris Sport frame that was a bit too small. First pic is pre-upgrade, I set it up for a 9-speed drivetrain/wheels, eventually put a Dura-Ace 9sp group on, then swapped for an Ultegra 9-speed group. Repainted the frame a few years ago, the bike is still fabulous. More pix can be found in the gallery at the vintage-trek site.
