Mount Diablo State Park To Install 30 Bike Turnouts

July 19, 2022 19:00 pm ·

Mount Diablo State Park started to install 30 bike turnouts on its roadways this week, something avid cyclists consider to be a historic win.

“This has truly been a team effort by thousands of people throughout the Bay Area, and I can’t thank you enough,” said Alan Kalin, president of the cyclist group Mount Diablo Cyclists, in a video announcement.

Last year, some 150,000 cyclists rode up Mount Diablo and made up 60 percent of all vehicle traffic on its roads.

Cyclists urged the California State Parks and Recreations Department to install turnouts to allow cars to safely pass cyclists climbing up the winding, steep road. In response, the state park installed three pilot bike turnouts, which Mount Diablo Cyclists said were “overwhelmingly successful” in reducing bike-car collisions. The organization said the roadway needs 35 to 40 turnouts total in order to have one every half-mile.

The turnouts are expected to be fully installed by Friday.

This looks like a really good thing. 👍 I'll have to get down there & check it out sometime. 🙂

Does anyone else see an ad for a health outfit, with an awesome bike bridge? Where is THAT, I wonder? It's like the bike bridge is lower than the water, hard to describe. 🤔

The plan for the whole Mountain is here: https://mountdiablocyclists.org/

It was kind of a tough sell, because there is no CalTrans standard detail for a bike turnout - how wide, how long, what sight distance, etc.
But the Park knew they had a problem and they worked with the State for funding and the cyclists for feedback on the example turnouts.
This will be good. If the cars KNOW there's a turnout ahead, they won't be in such a hurry to make dangerous passes.

SGR is first, but there should be 77 turnouts all over The Mountain by winter.

This was just about an hour before posting here.

This is excellent news. It should make DiabloScott's mountain safer and more enjoyable for bikes and cars both. A win/win.

Thanks, Siu Blue Wind and DiabloScott , for this info.

I decided years ago that my main objective was to promote cycling on Mount Diablo - posting about developments, news, hazards... welcome first timers and non-locals, pointers about safe techniques ... this really is good news.

Funny story - before GPS maps were ubiquitous, some friends came from out of state and wanted to car-camp on Diablo, so I told them how to do it. They had an early model TomTom or something and they couldn't get it to locate Northgate Road... "location not found". So after a lot of head scratching and browsing I figured out that it would only recognize "N Gate Rd". Then I sent TomTom an email telling them to fix it.

From my favorite SGR rider's Strava entry today:

I think those riders on the other side are just going to the trail. There's reportedly a security guard controlling access. They're expecting three weeks of closure on the south side.

Update - No access from the south this weekend either.
https://www.facebook.com/Mount-Diabl...2040059025878/

For this weekend (7/22, 7/23, & 7/24): Due to construction safety concerns Southgate Road from the park entrance to Rock City will be closed this weekend to all traffic. Southgate Road from Rock City to Junction will be open, but only accessible from Northgate Road. Live Oak Campground, Buckeye Group Camp, Wildcat Group Camp, and Barbecue Terrace Group Camp will be open, but only accessible from Northgate Road.
From 7/25/22 – 8/5: Southgate Road will be closed daily to all traffic (including weekends). Live Oak Campground, Buckeye Group Camp, Wildcat Group Camp, & Barbecue Terrace Group Camp will be closed and reservations will be cancelled or transferred to other available campsites.

Hey, all of a sudden, a certain user's username makes more sense. 😎 And his "claim" to a certain mountain. 😁😉
