There must be some pretty lugs in this pile. Just ignore the ugly ones!

That's not all of my lugs, just most of them. Yes I know I have a bit of a hoarding problem! I will start sticking some together (building frames), starting this summer if all goes well. Let me know if you want a vintage-style frame, I'm your man — or will be, in a few months. Still building the shop and fixtures. Stop by to see my progress if you're in Seattle

Aaaaaaaand this is why I like lugged steel frames. Holy moly, guys, beautiful submissions!! I have never saved so many images in such a short amount of time. Good to know that some of my personal lug drawings actually mimic lugs used on Mercians. Extremely informative, and some real artists out there (as I knew there were, just not the examples--I am only so old and experienced).

These lugs may not be C&V, and are not even steel....

But they sure are pretty...

Got some decent flat light and some time today for shooting a white frame outdoors. This is an '05 Waterford RS-22 Road-Sport frame, with e-richie Newvex lugs, in stainless steel. The Newvex lugs are Richard Sachs' tribute to the classic Nervex Pro lugset, officially the Nervex Ref. 49 acc to Sachs, reimagined for oversized tubing and higher stems. Acc. to Richard Sachs' post here, he started producing the lugs in '04, so they were relatively new when W'ford used them here. Seems like the stainless steel versions are no longer available:
https://richardsachs.com/product/ric...x-series-lugs/

I built this with a lugged Nitto stem because more lugs = more betterer. I didn't use a lugged Nitto seatpost because I like zero-offset posts, and the Nitto lugged post has a fair amount of setback. You'll also see the new Veloflex Corsa EVO tires I mentioned in an earlier post.

I've also got a fixed-gear RS-22 cousin with the same lugset, made a year later in '06. That one's got a wild pearlescent Purple Haze finish, which in the sunlight and on the wheel brings back fond memories of the '70s. Sometimes other riders complain the paint mesmerizes them so they have a hard time watching the road. The depth and psychedelic effect of the paint never shows well in photos, all you see are fairly large chunks of metalflake, but in real life it's quite a trip. I don't know the official W'ford paint name for this, I came up with Purple Haze. On some days this has the alternate name of The Bicycle Formerly Known As Prince.

For some reason this reminds me of Todd Snider's "Vinyl Records" lyrics..

"And as some of y'all mighta guessed already
I got piles and piles and piles of Tom Petty
In that dusty old pile of vinyl records I got sittin' on my floor"

good heavens, that is a lot of pearl/flake! I'm surprised that the bike doesn't cause more accidents!

The only bike I've seen with more flake was a Cherubim show bike. It was as much a glitter bomb as it was a bike, and it was impressive!

impressive accumulation!
ghost author Colnago, Medici, Hetchins, Masi 3V... I have a set of the Elka lugs, I have come up with a few ideas on how to rework them... nothing that resulted in a start button push.

Some pretty lugs indeed, and sure to be even prettier once you start building them into bikes!

1993 Sirocco, build by Peter van de Klundert, second generation framebuilder. I've never seen lugs like these. Jan Weymans, framebuilder in Belgium, told me had seen them once before but he didn't remember more. In form there's a little resemblance with the Peugeot Aztec-lugs from mid seventies.

I love this thread. The artistry in lug cutting is the passion of vintage bikes to me. You don't have to have beautiful lugs to have a fine riding racing bike. Many loved brands have crappy lug work. The time and energy put into fine lugwork is the passion of the builder. Some builders have a natural eye for the curves and patterns of great lug cutting. Some just don't. You might have finely carved lugs that just don't make it because the curves are all wrong. Just an ugly mess. It is nice to have a thread that points out what makes an artisan built bike. People like Dinucci, Weigle, Baylis, Moon, Sachs and Gordon are masters of their art as well as being great engineers that can produce something you will feel safe on going down a hill at 50 mph. The craft that I miss when being around a group of new cyclists all enamored by plastic bikes made by wage workers somewhere in Asia. The craftsman in this thread took lifetimes to learn their craft.
My thanks to all who decide to save one of these examples so they don't disappear into the past. There are not very many of us.
Luckily there are young people taking up the torch. Chapman, Coast, Bishop, and Dave Wages. Most will never make a good living at it. But they may leave their mark in the culture of bikes. Think about getting a new bike made by a modern craftsman rather than a rare old frame made by someone long gone.
