Dahon BoardWalk S1 Upgrade

Hi all,

I want to put some index gears on my dahon boardwalk S1 and make the bike soft to use in the city (maximun 16km/day). So I think to modify and put 3 speed gear.
  1. Tyres for 20" x 1.35 or 20" x 1.25
  2. What type of RIM it's good?
  3. Spokes, which one is better?
What the best options?

thank you for any help

I know the temptation is to upgrade but my advice is to sell your S1 and buy a used multi speed Boardwalk. These are my 2 and I have a bit more than $125 in them with all the up grades. The bikes are nice riding but you are looking at a lot of money put into a frame that is not designed for multiple gears. It doesn't have all the small fittings needed. These are my 2. Roger

+1 to what he said. I have a nice Dahon Helios but it was cheaper to get the features I wanted in a folder by buying another Dahon I found on CL

One of the reasons for that being that big manufacturers like Dahon can buy parts at great discounts, and can pass those savings on to us during sales.

By the time you redo the wheel, chain, shiftgear et al you will be in the cost range of a good used bike already set up.
While you get an option to entertain a 3 speed IGH with cassette , if you are not loving the project, I would say rhenning is right
about what to do. Consider Yan's Downtube or grab a used Dahon and just drive off.
Unless you can grab a used wheel with what you need, it's a no brainer.
Used 3 speed IGH bikes go for less than the price of a hub
