So you build those wheels and now you need to get them tight and true. Same as wheel building, find yourself a good reference site and get to it. If you think you need a dishing tool, here is a cheap DIY that works. The local hardware store will have everything you need. Buy the strip of metal and the bolt/washers/nuts. Drill a hole in the center and install the bolt/washers/nuts. Bend the metal strip and check your angles/sides. That's it, now you have a dishing tool.

Other than trial and error, the one truing tip I can give is this: Once you've snugged up the wheel some and are ready for the truing, put the wheel in the dropouts. Take the brake caliper off and mount a measuring device. Now slowly spin the wheel. There will be some point on the rim that will be true. Mark that point on the inside of the rim. True the rest of the rim to that point. Never let that point get out of true. If you have an iPhone, there is a spoke tension app for iPhones.

Well look what I found...

Everything original.. even tires which are still good! Pretty sure it was never ridden much. $175! Even the tubes were still good. Aired it up and lubed the chain and turned this baby loose. Lightest bike I have ever felt. Like driving a vintage ferrari.

Um, I found a fork in a box.....

It appears to be ready for shipping.
Alloy, polished, from an Ironman Carbon.
I cannot remember to whom it goes, or where.
PM me if you're the huckleberry.
I'll check my way too long list of PMs and get it shipped.

Sweet! No apparent wear on the cranks, original snap in covers, dork disc, etc. That bike was ridden little and carefully stored. Looks like the original tires too -- skinny-minnie Panaracer Tecnova 700x20. I'd ride those maybe once on smooth pavement just for grins, then put 'em away as sorta-collectibles.

Try a set of Continental Ultra Sport II tires in 700x23. Best affordable tires I've tried. I'm a cheapskate but still want good tires. Those Conti's cost around $30-$40 a pair, depending on current sale prices, and ride almost as nicely as my much more expensive Schwalbe One V-Guards. I'm currently riding Conti Grand Prix Classic skinwalls, which look great -- true translucent skinwalls, handmade in Germany -- and cost twice as much but don't ride any better than the Ultra Sport II.

Yea, I’ll do a full strip and frame restoration. Overhaul all bearings and replace all consumables. And you’re right about the panaracers, 20 up front lol. Actually has 25 rear which makes me think it was stock since I can’t see how someone who didn’t ride the bike much went out and bought a fatter rear in the same make. I do like the conti ultra sport a lot. For the aesthetic of the bike I will probably do something a little higher end in a gumwall. If I was gonna restore and sell I’d do something lower end like a michelin dynamic but I can’t really see myself parting with such a great find unless the money was too good to pass up or I find another dream bike and my wife won’t let me keep both lol....

Yeah, the Michelin Dynamics are a great value in a gumwall. The sidewalls are stiff, so the ride may not be great compared with other tires. But the supple, thin sidewall of the Conti Grand Prix Classic skinwalls doesn't magically translate to a significantly better ride. They look great and ride well, but it's not really any better than the Ultra Sport II.

Thinking about trying to satisfy my tinker bug and upgrading this. Is it possible at all to go 2X10 on this?

It is currently set up as a 2x8 with 6400.

If it is possible, what do I have to change out? I’m assuming it’s everything but the frame.

You can keep the wheels and the derailleurs, they’ll both work with Shimano 9-10 speed. You need 10 speed 105, Ultegra or Dura Ace STI shifters (or 7850/7900 downtube shifters and brake levers), a ten speed cassette and ten speed chain. Set it up properly and patiently and you’ll be very happy. You can upgrade to a ramped and pinned 130 bcd chainring for marginally improved shifting up front.

Any recommendation on the group set numbers for the STI shifters or chainrings if you’ve experienced them?

Have had good luck with FSA chainrings.
For STI's, 5600 105, 6600 Ultegra, 7800 Dura Ace are all good but do not run the shift cables under the bar tape. Some folks prefer all of the cables to run under the bar tape. That would be 5700 105, 6700 Ultegra, and 7900 Dura Ace. All six of those suggestions are ten speed brake/shifter components. Personally have had good luck with both 105 and Ultegra STI units.

I just finished posting a long post starting with Thanking @rccardr for tires he sent me and finishing with thinking about tuning bikes for some cash. Thanks again Doc. But I posted it on another thread. Hot dang it! I didn't save it because I immediately deleted it. Oh well I'll try again tomorrow.
