Bought an '87 Panasonic DX2000 ...

Who wants to help me upgrade?

I'm completely new to road bikes. I'm primarily a MTB guy, but I found this DX2000 in decent shape for $125. I searched around Craigslist for a month or so for a good deal, but decided to pounce on this after doing a little research. From what I've gathered, it's entirely stock except for the seat.

It needs some TLC. Aside from a little basic cleaning, it needs new tires, possibly rims (but they look structurally sound), cables and a chain to get it rolling again -- my primary objective. Beyond that, it's an upgrader's dream.

Anything I should know about this guy? Any brands/ideal replacements to look at? And thanks in advance!

Kudos to you for doing the research and pouncing on a good one

I like your game plan, that bike looks to have some pretty good parts on it. Replace the saddle, clean it up and hit the road.

Wow... Are those wear marks on the saddle? I'd say that should be your only upgrade. I think a white saddle would look great.

I'd replace the tires with Panaracer Pasela tires. I agree with the white saddle suggestion, too.

Nice pick up. Congrats!

+1 for the Panaracers, two of my bikes sport them and they are good for the decent price.

I have a white padded saddle you can have for the cost of shipping if you want it. Its nothing fancy, I can send a picture if you want. If you do want something fancy... a white Regal saddle would be really nice

It's my size, ship it here. Call me with the upgrades you want done. I'll tell you how it comes out.

That color red, get Panaracer Stradius with the red wall. 14.99 right now on sale.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'm hoping it'll last me for at least as long as it's been alive. The saddle is definitely shot, but so are the cables and chain. No biggie, but I want this guy in top shape before I head out. If I'm able to get Panaracers (I'm probably going to drop it off at a LBS and have them do everything), how much should I expect to spend, if you had to guesstimate?

Sweet! I'll shoot you a PM.

I'd get some real-life pics up of the Panasonic (the above pic's from the craigslist ad), but it needs some cleaning and I'm recovering from a Melvins concert.

Ha, I hear you. I'll try to get you some pictures of the saddle tomorrow.

Niagara Cycle has Panaracers for 18.68 per tire, plus shipping.

These red and black Michelins might look very cool on your bike and they are only 17.60 per tire.

You can get cheaper tires, my LBS has some specialized tires for about 11.00 and I thought they were fine. Put some thought into what width of tire you want. 25mm will be fast and a bit more plush that 21 or 23mm tires. The 28mm Continental tires on my Trek seem extra plush and are big enough for limestone bike paths.

I remember seeing that '87 DX-2000 on CL. Good buy. ;-)

I think I'd go for one of the white re-issue Selle Italia turbo saddles. I agree with changing to red bar tape if it is going to be a daily rider... unless you're Mr. Clean it is hard to pull of the white tape. ;-)
If you want to stay gumwall on the tires, the 700x23 Paselas would do the trick.

Holy crap, I actually went to see this bike but it was too small!! Guy named Rob sold it to you, right? I loved the Light Action shifters on it, but the tires and saddle are a complete mess. I think you need to adjust the derailleur limit on the back, because it was grinding pretty bad in the high gear.

Theres a Panasonic DX6000 on Buffalo CL right now for 300 bucks. It has a full Shimano 600 group with Araya rims in VGC. I had him down to 250 before I found my Miyata 710...wish I had more money though, hehe...

At first, I was horrified. Now that I think about it, this sounds awesome.

I think it'll look great with mkeller234's white saddle. And I agree on the red/black tape suggestion. Tape seems stock and it's pretty dirty. And Mr. Clean I ain't.

Hey, small world! Yeah, met with Rob yesterday; nice guy. I was pumped to see it was a perfect fit. I really dig the shifters, but yeah -- tires and saddle are going in the trash. The drivetrain will need some tweaking for sure, but there's a winner in here somewhere, it seems.

Are you in OKC? It'd be cool to shadow some local riders and pick up tips once I get this guy rocking.

I saw this too... I have to fix my current bike first though. Did any of you guys see the Celeste Cannondale for $100 in Stillwater? The lady missed my call and when I called a few hours later she had already sold it!

Shimano light action is great stuff and will work very well when you get it set up.

I like red bar tape too...BUT you could get cleanable white tape. Something like Fizik bar tape, it takes 5 minutes to wipe clean. I also think the Fizik tape looks very pimped in it's own perforated way.

This I dig. I usually wear gloves, so maybe dirt won't be that big of a deal. White just looks right on this bike.

OK, a question re: cleaning -- how should I go about cleaning the brakes? I'm not positive whether they're chrome and I don't want to mess them up.

well I would bet that they are aluminum with chromed steel bolts and springs.

They are easy to clean and if you go the extra mile they can look great.

Here is my method, I take the brakes completely apart (very simple)
1 Do only 1 at a time!! So you can compare when putting it back together

2 Disassemble everything and sort the steel from the chrome (when in doubt test with a magnet, if it sticks it's steel)

3 Clean each piece with dish soap and a soft old toothbrush

4 Any steel parts with rust go into a jar of vinegar. Let them soak a few hours and then rewash them with the toothbrush. Do not put any aluminum in the vinegar because it will destroy it, I have tested that myself.

5 After cleaning the aluminum parts use some mothers aluminum polish and an old cotton rag to polish them up.

If the parts are bare aluminum you will get a mirror shine. If the parts are anodized you will get a soft finish.

Here are some of my results:

These pieces are both anodized:

You know, I've put off clipless pedals on my Ibex for a long time. I've either had cages or platforms for as long as I can remember. I'd love to try something in the Shimano SPD family on the MTB, but I'm 100% noob when it comes to clipless road pedals. Might be something I delve into a bit down the road. For now, I think I'll keep them as is.

Welcome to my sig.

Matt: thanks for the breakdown! I'm a little antsy when it comes to disassembling bikes, but I gotta learn it someday. Might as well start now. Really wanted to get started cleaning it up today, but my ears are still ringing from last night's concert. Learned my lesson already, please turn it off.

I'll update this thread tomorrow afternoon with a few high-res shots.

Looks like I got a decent deal, then. After some upgrades and cleaning, I'll probably be about even with that CL ad. Nice.

I'm completely geeking out here at work looking for a simple but wireless computer. I had a cheap Schwinn and it basically fell apart. Do you guys use computers at all?

OH wait I get it now!!! Yes, I have a cheapie computer on one of my road bikes. I like having it on there, aside from keeping track of mileage and speed my favorite feature is the simple clock. It's nice to know at any given time what time it is.

Trek sells a wireless computer for 40ish I think.
