And I guarantee that the people complaining about censorship on internet forums would probably be the most strict about censorship if they owned or moderated a forum.

I fully understand moderation/censorship or whatever else you want to call it where it comes to maintaining decorum on a forum. Us bunch a heathens would be at each others throat in every sub forum here.....

Censorship, schmensorship. The forum's owner is free to make and enforce whatever rules it desires. If that gets your Underoos is a twist, you are free to, you know, not post here. Sheesh. Is it that hard to grasp?

I also think the reasonable judgment has been made that allowing people to go on and on about certain topics is just going to drive out discussion about bikes and bicycling. Does anyone seriously think it's hard to find a place to talk about the shooty shooty if you can't talk about it here?

I live in a fairly dangerous city. Speed is the cure. And lots of awareness of what's going on far ahead of me in case someone(s) are setting up an ambush. Basically I "ride it like I stole it" much of the time, keep up with traffic if there is any (somebody jumping me puts them in front of the moving car behind me). I can tell you one thing for certain: There will not be any time for getting you hands on bear spray or anything else if you get attacked. You better be truckin', aware, and capable of maneuvers and sprint speed.

In your case you got lucky. Look at this as an opportunity to become more aware of non-traffic trouble as a habit. Cycling in sketchy hoods is not relaxing, Zen, or meditative. Pay attention to EVERYTHING. It can be exhausting in a different manner, and you stay in great shape by keeping your speed up.

Not only that, but shooty shooties can be an emotional topic which generates a lot of hostility toward each other. And we already have a subforum for that so it doesn't really belong here at all.

He chased me for about five houses before seeing that he couldn't catch me. I can only assume that he was going to try to steal my bike. This really shook me up, as you can imagine. I've been a bit careful about passing through that area again but have done so several times now w/o any further incident.
What area were you in? I bike in Slidell sometimes?

See you.
You either value freedom of expression or you don't. My values don't migrate based on who might be doing the restricting.

I used to live in the next subdivision south of there on Kempsey Ct. I rode through there regularly. It seemed like a quiet, low threat area at the time. Did you report it to the PD?

No, I didn't. I probably should have. I will if it happens again. I'm hoping that it was a one-off thing. I will keep my speed up when riding through there again. If I hadn't ran a stop sign the guy would have probably caught up to me.

That "you either value.. or you don't" statement is ridiculous. The forum owners also have rights of expression to define the scope of the forum. Your freedom of expression doesn't extend to forcing someone else to promote your views. For freedom of expression to be meaningful, there has to be some balance of who gets to speak about what where. Otherwise all forums would be a similar-looking morass of people babbling on and no one listening.

Most discussion forums these days have restrictions on hate speech, anything related to violence, weapons, etc. You have to abide by their rules or you move on in protest.

And with that, this thread has veered too far off topic.
