I chose the JHU guy for several reasons (one was I found an article from some East Coast magazine "What surgeon do surgeons go to?" and he was the one shoulder surgeons went to) but the fact that he talked to me in terms of returning to all my athletic activities vs. just having a successful surgery was the deal maker. Turned out to be a good decision.
My surgeon discusses the same with me. Wanted to know if I planned to keep cycling or if I was done with it. When I told him my plan was to get back on the bike as soon as possible, he told me that the damage was very extensive and it might take several surgeries to repair correctly, but he said that I would eventually be able to ride the bike again. Down side is that it took 5 surgeries to fix all the issues. My shoulder basically disintegrated when I crashed and more or less fragmented so much, that when the bone fragments grew back, they did so in very odd positions and shapes and they had to trim and grind it to a normal layout so my arm would be correctly positioned. I also had the potential of having loss of feeling due to nerve damage, but luckily, he was able to ensure outside of some sensitivity in the top of the shoulder, I have no longer term issues with the nerves.
