I thought I could get a ride in this morning before the smoke got real bad.Plan was to ride twelve miles into the north wind and turn around for a nice tailwind ride home.About 4.5 miles in,the wind kicked up and brought smoke in as bad as I have seen it. This is in northern Utah. Smoke is from California. I already had a high quality mask on. A cold front moved in a pushed the smoke even lower in the atmosphere . Looks like I am off the bike for a few days.People should not even be outside let alone exercise or work.

I've been off the bike since July 24th, i.e. two weeks down the tubes.
BTW it's mostly our own smoke; at one point we had more than 300 wildfires burning in BC (currently "just/only" 271). But since we now have gusty southerly wind that could change.

Nope!
More smoke and not enough rain. Our vehicles got "decorated" with soot, ash and some embers that were the size of my thumb nail.
We live just outside the Vernon evacuation alert zone. The White Rock Lake fire is way too big and near for comfort.

So I took a maiden voyage on my new bike this morning. This is my 10th post so I will post pictures in the next one. Sorry if it’s a bit unorthodox.

so like I said above this was my first ride on a new bike I picked up Monday. An early 70th birthday present, Trek Domane AL5 disc. Took a 21 mile loop down a bike path here in Falmouth on Cape Cod. Love the bike, my LBS spent 90 mins fitting me for the bike on Monday. My story is a former runner for 20 years, but running is a self selecting sport so at 50 I moved into rowing on an erg at my local gym COVID hits and the shut down so I had a 12 year old tank of a Globe hybrid that I pulled out,had tuned, and started riding. That was around a year and a half ago. I really started to enjoy cycling so I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade. Good ideas are not my specialty but this one was. Thankful for such a nice morning

I’ve been riding enough, tho not a lot by somes standards. Every ride has been filled with fun and pleasure. Weather has been quite good, but heat dome building for next 3 days. I will be wrenching and gluing tires. And X-training, I hope.


Old or newer - doesn’t matter. Drop the bars and ride on.

We've been having beautiful weather for the past few days, and I rode just over 20 miles Friday and just under 30 today. Sunny, light wind, mid-70s. Perfect!

Son and GS visited during the last 3 weeks of July. GS's bike was suddenly too small for him, and son scoured CL and FB, finding a Trek 920 - double-butted True Temper tubing at a great price. GS was complaining that his old bike was too slow, so we changed the 2.1" knobbies to 1.5" sort of slick tires. GS, aged 11 and 3/4, said something like, 'I can't believe this bike has so much momentum.'

Meanwhile, son had just acquired a Lemond Tourmalet, at a GREAT price, with Reynolds 853 main triangle. I was envious at first, but it wasn't appreciably lighter than my 1973 MKM. It's probably stiffer, though, with it's shorter chain stay. The TT may be shorter than mine, too. In any case, we did some work on it, but never got to the hubs. We road about 100 miles together. This year, unlike last, my son had to slow down to keep us together. I think we had a good talk on every ride. Good visit.

Did a metric century today with a good friend on the beautiful Pine Creek Rail Trail in northern central PA. His longest ever, my longest in a number of years.

I had an awesome trip to PA last Oct to ride various trails and rode Pine Creek - really nice, and I had the trail all to myself in the AM. Makes me wish I lived there. If you're from PA I assume you've been on the GAP too.

*Hanging my head in shame* No, I haven't hit the GAP yet, it's on the list. Glad you liked Pine Creek, it is a wonderful trail, and I plan to do a few more trips on it (I'm a decent drive away from it) My home trail is Lower, which is a very nice one as well.

14 miles this morning, went down so I had to go back up. Nice time getting used to my new bike, it’s different than my ‘73 Falcon which I’ve been riding all year, but it’s surprisingly similar even though it’s 48 years newer.

Did only 3 miles today, but after 10 days in ICU with a brain hemorrhage and then my pelvis getting out of position from laying in the bed the 3 miles felt pretty good! Final CT scan next Monday and hopefully all restrictions will be removed.

26+ miles yesterday with local bike club. Very high humidity made the ride a challenge even at lower speeds than I've been used to. I went down because I ran into the rider ahead of me - for some unremembered reason, I looked down as I was coming up on the other rider just as she slowed for a stop sign. By the time I looked up again, it was too late. Skinned my knee, bounced on my shoulder, helmet hit the ground pretty gently, but I'm considering a new helmet.

The people in the group were very nice, and I appreciate it. They sounded a little strange, though, though - it wasn't until I got home (3 or 4miles later, that I realized I had lost my left hearing aid. I went back to the site and found it, but it looks like it was run over at least once, and it's not quite right. Off to Costco this afternoon to have it checked out.

I'm very embarrassed and a little worried about why I looked down in that situation. I just can't think of a good reason for doing that. At 77, I know my brain isn't what it once was. BTW, this is the first crash I've ever caused.

Yup. Yesterday did 29.5 miles and climbed 1500’ with an ideal temperature of 70 and cloudy. Felt strong climbing and felt strong in general. It was a good day.

It had been a while since I had taken the '76 Moto Grand Touring out (my riding is curtailed quite a bit during the Texas summers). I left the house early, and met up with our local mayor (his orange Fuji Absolute) for a spin and to check out some of the newer trails our little city is building to make it much more bike friendly. Every time I jump on this bike and spin miles, I kick myself for pulling my hybrid down as much as I do. The Moto is so smooth, climbs well, and just glides down the road or path. It's mileage will definitely ramp up as the temps start to cool as we head towards fall and winter.

Today is a rest day, was out there for 62 km yesterday, the first 36 km with a lot of grades — up to 13%. Just started to look at the video(s) and off hand I'd say I wasn't really in the "fully ready" condition right from the start. The start being a 2 km grade up to 10+%.
Well it is what it is and more rest for the next of that "killer ride". But it was fun on the downhills.
Oh yes when I told SWMBO about the struggle on the last 26 km — that's the flat rail trail — she told me that I'm nuts. Well, what can I say, eh?

I used to ride from Quincy to Falmouth just about every weekend in the summer. Friend's family had a house on Race Point there, so I would crash for the night and ride home the next day. Rte 28 through the center of town got a bit "iffy" during the summer months. You really had to be on your toes if you were cycling. Traffic was crazy!
