Tan Black or White Hoods?

Hey everyone while I figure out my freehub and tire situation, I wanted to ask your opinion of this.

The bike came with tan hoods that are cracking pretty badly. I’m thinking moving to black…would it be more of befitting?

For those with an eye for colour and with themes please let me know! 😀

thanks very much!

Now I need to get some work done!

Black hoods, like black bar tape, cable housings, saddles etc is the boring choice. It’s everywhere and if you care about your bike being unique, it’s not it.

If you can make any other color work, go for it.

.
...in ancient times, before recorded history began, all we could get was the tan colored gum hoods. So that's what I used, back then....before all this stuff got written down.

black may be boring, but the hoods matching the saddle is a pretty standard and accepted practice. then add black bar tape for good measure. get goofy with housing if you want an accent color.
color bar tape works too, sometimes.

tan hoods are pretty classic/iconic though.

white? no.

I imagine black ages the best, and gum ages second best.
.... but shouldn't this choice also depend on the looks & colors of the bike that the hoods will be going on?

(I've got all three on different bikes, and don't have any major preference)

FWIW Magic Erasers work well for cleaning rubber.

And if you're lucky, you'll be able to get the bike off the stand before smudging it somehow.

What are the brake levers? I don't especially like the tan Dia Compe hoods (or any Dia Compe hoods for that matter), but the translucent Campy clone hoods are nice.

Pic of the bike?

Seems to me that black is almost exclusively a modern bike thing, so is not really a valid option for C&V bikes unless you're going for a very specific color scheme (all black bike and components, etc). Almost all bikes prior to the 1980s came with gum-colored hoods or no hoods, with occasional white or grey hoods in certain component sets. That said, it's your bike so do what goes well with the bike color, tape color, and your taste.

What Andy said. Dia Compe hoods don't even fit Dia Compe levers.

I haven't built up a bike in a while. But if I needed hoods, I would have to move the Rustines from a keeper on to the new bike (given it's not Campy equipped) and buy Campy knockoffs for the keeper. That's how bad it's become. Maybe a first world problem, but still...

tldr? Dia Compe hoods are gross.
