I intend to purchase a new Garmin bike computer in March/April of 2022. I'd rather get the latest and greatest as opposed to getting the current model on sale.

Do you think the 1040 will be available by then, or will the 1030+ stay in production for a while longer?

I would think the chip shortage issue would impact either model.

Garmin keeps all their new models very hush hush until the last moment. While there are some common times they release new models, it's not regular enough to say it's written in stone that they do. Something on the order of 2 weeks is about the soonest one might really know.

I personally wouldn't expect anything new to be released until the shipping and other supply issues are taken care of. But who knows. Maybe the new model is on a boat anchored off the coast waiting to be unloaded. <grin> (totally not serious on the last part)

If you buy the best model of Edge or other Garmin that does what you need and want, then it'll last you a long time. My Edge 500 did. After over 10 years of waiting for it to break so I could rationalize a new purchase, my older son bought me a new Garmin just so he could see where I was using the group ride feature. Otherwise my Edge really did everything I needed.

Though Di2, radar and light control probably would have finally pushed me to buy a newer Edge if he hadn't already gifted me one.

I forget which model it was, but before one of garmins big releases an account from Switzerland showed up here and "asked" about a model nobody else had heard of.

I keep hoping someone that works for garmin will do that for other new models, but so far no joy.

Can I throw in that most Garmin models get a lot better after their first post-release software upgrade? So while you may buy the first 1040 (or whatever) to show up in your state, you might rather wait and buy one six months later.

That was certainly true for a couple of the Garmin running watches I've owned. Hardware was good, software needed 3-6 months for bug fixes.

There is no downside being a early adopter with Garmin devices in my opinion. The products usually ship fairly functional with some bugs which firmware updates usually address, however the unit is fully functional and gets better with time.

That would make sense if you paid a lower price six months later.
