Let's see your crankset

I need some inspiration for a new build. I am most interested in single-ring setups, but I'm happy to see anything. Show me the best you have.

Here are/have been a couple of mine.

Really, really like that first FB! I have come to appreciate older cottered immensely, even on old ten speeds like the Olmo I have. More design and less bolts. Hope these help!

Sugino with factory drillium, I pulled the small ring and put the large ring to the back. Work in progress...

58' thin arm 151bcd + block chain

Please ignore the cruddy water paint I tested on lugs and never cleaned off

Schwinn 39?+ bike is 40'ish based on SN

Raleigh from 51' Clubman in first pic

SE 09' all black bike with only chainring bolt color. Just in case you try and figure color in..

Here are my favorite looking older cranks, Nervar Stars, they polish up stunningly well and have neat details. If these strike anyone's fancy, they're actually sitting unused in my box-o-parts at the moment, I just don't have the right bike to put them on:

Can't go wrong with Record cranks either though:

Not C&V, but I really like how Sram Red cranks look after taking the logos off:

Top Line double, not antique but they came w/ a weight limit that I happily to do not (quite) exceed.
Beautiful CNC machining and finish from the 1990's era and very Light.

I'm just looking at this time so I'm happy with anything you would post.

I'm trying to decide what to use for a new build. I'd even go, dare I say it, French.

I don't know who made these - anyone? The only marking on the back "Vanadia" which I assume means vanadium. Very slim and elegant.

Forgive me for going low- brow -- LOL, but you DID ask for pics of cranksets (The early cottered cranksets that are pictured in this thread are a bit before my time -- but I sure like looking at them )

You also mentioned single ring set-ups ---- I'm sure this isn't what you had in mind, but it is "interesting" ---- was on a dedicated time trial setup -- all I cared about was getting a bigger wheel on there -- the QBP ring does not fit the spider very well at all, --- but for a privateer TT effort, -- this helped to haul the mail for a flat course

Actually -- if you ignore the bike its attached to and just look at the crankset -- this is the most interesting crankset I have in possession

Sugino 75 aero crankset with a bonded carbon fibre chainwheel -----

I kinda did the same. The thread was up a while so I posted a ton of cranks to catch it up. hahaha

The drive side crank on my Fothergill is marked CONSTRICTOR while the non-drive side is marked BSA (with the classic BSA pile of rifles logo). Both made by BSA, they appear to be a matched set; 6 1/2" arms with the same profile, same deep flutes on both sides. The chain ring is only marked 46. This is a typical crank on higher end English bikes of the 30's-40's. It has a five pointed star like a Stronglight, but it's a very different design; note the five pentagons.

The Williams 1200 was their top of the line model, very thin arms, forged spider. This is a lighter crank than the Constrictor above, but I'm not currently using it because the arms are 6 3/4" which is a bit long for my taste. Arms fluted on only one side.

It has the same bolt circle as most continental 3-arm cranks, such as this Magistroni. But the Magistroni is inexplicably heavier (and it's not just the extra ring)

My oldest cotterless crank is this Stronglight 57, from about 1958-9. The design is pretty similar to the Stronglight 49D:

But lately I've become fond of the SR Custom 3, made for a short while in the 1970's.

It's "melt forged" which is a pretty cheap manufacturing method, and I think results in a less than perfect finish, but it's well designed and the spider is small enough to take a 27t ring. Until recently the 86 mm bcd rings were unique, but now FSA makes a line of cranks using this same bolt pattern, so a limited range of replacement rings is available. The inner ring shown here is an FSA stainless steel one. I think of it as the cheapskate's Rene Herse crank. Speaking of which, someone has to post one of those, but it won't be me, since I don't own one. What about it, @gugie?

1960 Agrati. Like the Magistroni shown earlier in this thread, its drive side arm and spider were made out of a single piece of steel, rather than being swaged together.

Mine has the 3-to-6-bolt Simplex adapters and aluminum Simplex chainrings. (58(!)-45 shown -- I have since obtained other ring sizes and plan to use either 49-46 with a 6-speed freewheel or 49-45 with a 5-speed. 45T is the minimum in this 6-bolt pattern, which may explain why 52-45 was so popular on French bikes for many years.)
