...trust me when I say this: there are certain topics in the C+V that are hot button issues, just like anyplace else. You learn to tiptoe around them after a while. I got points in the C+V once for starting a thread asking why anyone would Rivendellicize a classic paramount, then try to sell it on the local CL for more than it was worth original. Not making this up.

Kind of like how all the medical threads were in 50+., It was soooo filled with medical issues that it was hard to find cycling content. We made a separate one for those as well. It took a while but it's getting good traffic.
It's a nice thought, but given how accepting C&V is, I just think it's not in the overall spirit. Especially given that it is its own forum and not a subforum.

It also feels - from these responses - as if the decision took into account only one member's input rather than asking the community - and as you might have noticed, the actual reception has been lukewarm. Heck, even looking at the most popular C&V threads (The Facilitators / ISO-Trade / 3-speeds / Craigslist Finds) would have been a better litmus test of interest.

I'm sorry to put it this way, as we all sound quite ungrateful, but this subforum just seems too divisive. C&V is a place where 1940's Uragos and 1990's EL-tubed bikes with Dura-Ace 7600 coexist in harmony, as do MTBs of the period. It doesn't really help - it just means the same people are going to be torn between spending time on two forums when it was previously one.

-Kurt

P.S.: In addition to the ISO/For Trade idea I mentioned earlier, it might be really great to have a "whatizdis" subforum for bike identification. It'd be easy enough to get to from the main C&V subforum, and it'd be a perfect playground for those who love to identify unknown machines.

My bikes don't qualify. One's a 7-speed, the other a 9-speed. Brifters were a key part of the decision as to which drive train to run. (I'll never ride a bike where the brake levers operate the gears, I've been applying sideways pressure to the levers forever to steady the HBs when I reach down for a bottle. NOT when I want to be shifting!) So I've got a Campy drive train but ... it's never graduated from an ongoing case of the DTs.

I saw the thread title and thought that maybe the moderators were going to try P & R again, maybe with new guidelines. This looks far easier to manage!

How about incorporating "whatizdis" into an existing subforum as "Appraisals and Identification?"
The line between the two is at times quite fuzzy.
C&V has been liberally infested with ID requests, more so lately it seems to me, which pushes other stuff off the front page?
Sometimes I relish a good mystery, and sometimes it's annoying to have someone post a seller's pic from some CL or FB or ebay listing, and the ID can't be made because the forks can't be pulled or the underside of BB can't be photographed, or the item is sold. If the ID requests had their own place, even in Appraisals, I could choose to visit when the mood strikes?

(Caveat: I don't visit any other subforum here except "Appraisals." I do CR. I don't do any other Social Media. My mileage may vary?)

I think it would scare away those who enjoy a good mystery who - at the time of the ID - don't feel as if they're being used by an opportunistic twit.

Case in point, I don't mind helping an identification thread when I think I can provide a helpful comment or some sort of insight. However, valuation threads annoy the living hell out of me ("Want to know what it's worth? Do a Completed Auctions search on eBay, dum dum!") so I stay out of that forum entirely - and woud avoid identification threads as well if it meant paging through that nonsense.

I do think I prefer to keep those early brifter bikes in the C&V forum.

We get a lot of the modern components on old frame in here and we also get a lot of modern steel and custom builds in here too.

To me, those bikes fit a certain aesthetic. Even if they aren't quite 'vintage' per se. I still like them.

I would like to see the new forum as a sub-forum of C&V.

New subforums are fine, but if my threads start getting moved there because I put indexed shifters on my C&V frames I'm going to be sad.

I don’t mind it, but those bikes don’t interest me. That being said, this seems like a good suggestion.

I think a poll in the C&V forum to gauge interest would have been a good idea.

If it stays and gets traction then keep it. If not, dump it. But I’m thinking it won’t gain any.

I don't consider this a gift, I'm sorry you expended effort on it cause I see no reason to divide my time visiting another Forum for threads/posts on subjects that I have no reason to regard as separate or distinct from Classic & Vintage subject matter.
So if those posts and threads no longer appear in this Forum I won't ever read them.
Was that actually the point?

So this thing is permanent now...*sigh.*

No reflection upon Siu, but it feels as if every time we ask for something useful, we don't get it here at C&V. But some tosh like this...handed on a silver platter with a single request.

Now, if the process for vetting this out has changed over the years...I'm all ears, as I'd like to re-request an ISO/For Trade subforum.

My response is:

I have bikes from the 70s-90s with 5-9 speed drivetrains. They all have barcons except for one I am building up for a specific ride. That one will have Microshift STis.

1) Where do I need to post threads about 9 speed 90s bikes with barcons? Unlike brifters, barcons transcend all of the time periods in question.
2) Where do I post a thread about the quality of Microshift 7-9 speed STIs? Do I post it in the Road forum, the 7-9 speed brifter forum or the C & V forum?

If I could make a suggestion, it would be to have a (Please help ID this -----) forum and Apprasial/"Whats' it worth) forum in the same C & V forum/subforum.

So, what is the purpose of the sticky "New Classic Rides and Rigs 1.1" thread? I never understood, but assumed it was something related to this new subforum?

Or not?

So what happens when I post about this 1988 Pinarello Cadore that's basically a last hurrah of conventional-tube steel frames...but it has early 1990's Ergos on it?

Does it get banished to the 7-8-9 Brifter pit of doom?

We just became the CR List with pictures, folks.
