Got a bike industry lesson......
My GF rides a Colnago CL-X that is an endurance geometry bike. It's about 5 yrs old. Over the years she has bought me a Masi Gran Criterium S w/ Dura Ace (now 15 yrs old) and my CAAD 12. When she bought me that Masi I bought her a Fuji Team Sport. Our birthdays are 2 months apart. So, next August it's my turn. But, she loves her Colnago, and has a Trek Domane for a backup, so I started looking at doing a SRAM wireless electronic mod for her Colnago. This is where the fun starts. I went to my LBS which is also a Cannondale dealer. First I explored the SRAM update but that would have to include a new tubeless rear wheel. Apparently, the existing Mavic Ksyrium Elite UST hub is not compatible with wireless. So, the cost of the wireless system and a new wheel is starting to get pricey for a 5-yr old bike. Well, how about a CAAD 13 with DI2 and disc brakes? Not a choice since Cannondale has slimmed down their range and does not offer the CAAD 13 with electronic shifting. Retrofitting one gets seriously expensive. So, how about a Synapse? That sets me back $4650 plus tax. In addition there will be no bikes available until next year and the electronic groups are 6 months out. Looks like nothing is going to be happening until some time next year. Saving up for her birthday in August. I guess that's a good thing.

A lot of the LBS's people here say their suppliers are telling them it'll be mid to late summer of 2022 when inventories of everything bike related start returning to normal.
Of course in 2020 they were saying it'd be late summer to fall of 2021.
So I'm thinking in 2022, they'll be saying late winter to spring of 2023. <grin>

To be precise, the issue is not wireless shifting per se, but the rear hub cannot be retrofitted with an SRAM XDR drive body to use an SRAM XDR 10-xx cassette. How about Campagnolo EPS or Shimano Di2?

OP, a new wheelset and groupset will cost less than a new bike, and might actually be do-able even with the current new bike shortage. If she likes the Colnago frame, that might still be a good way to go. Or give her an IOU for a b-day present, and get her a bike when the shortage wanes.
I've gotta say, that's quite a tradition. I bought my wife an apple watch for her last birthday, and it's probably the most that I've spent on a b-day gift for her by a factor of five.

Can't do that. There are legal complications that are about both of us having kids from other marriages. Neither of us want to complicate inheritances. Of course, in my case, this just means my son gets bicycles and a ducati along with some power equipment. We've lived together for 15 years and are enjoying living in sin.

For a birthday I would find a retailer who sells interesting biking clothes (shorts, bibs, jerseys, gloves, socks, etc) and get her a small selection - like a pair of black shorts and a jersey - and include a gift certificate so she can select a some more kit to her liking.
Also, items to giver existing bike a newish feel like new handlebar tape, new tires, a new under-saddle bag for spare tube, etc. Or maybe a reservation for a weekend at a hotel somewhere that has good riding. It doesn't sound like either of you need a new bike.

Either n+1 or new wheels. If the wheels, it’s a Colnago so it deserves to be prepared for Campi.
