I agree. The guy I bought it from rode it to work everyday until he bought a electric bike. I bought it kinda of sight unseen. I showed him the pics and he offered my money back but I told him it was my fault for paying in advance without checking it out. I assumed it was fine since he was riding it regularly. He was pretty happy he bought the electric just in time. He was surprised it didn't break while he was riding it

I have recently added three bikes to my stable, which all just fit across my 'stable' as well

Meet 'Danusia' (on top), 'Big R' (in the middle) and 'Zenit' (hiding at the back).

Skoot?

If you're not familiar with this bike, it was actually a very clever attempt to to make a convenient and clean folder that could be "disguised" as a suitcase. The "main" wheels fold up inside the body of the case, the three piece foldable handlebars go back and down, the quick release cranks come off and are stashed in the case under the seat, and the seat sinks into the case as well. You then pull a canvas "lid" over the top of the case, and you can then pull it along like a suitcase. The idea was that with this design, nobody could deny access into a store or on a bus because it doesn't even look like a folder. It kind of has that "James Bond" appeal to it - or the "transformers" - depending on which decade you spent in your formative years. BTW, although this bike may look kind of funky, it was designed by someone from the aerospace industry, so a lot of thought went into it, the components were designed and machined with tight precision, and the case itself is made from a high density polymer material, so it's actually lighter and stronger than plastic or even a lot of fiberglass shells. For further strength, the actual frame is more like a minimalist shell. Very clever indeed. And - it's a lot of fun to ride! Ancillary benefits: there is a built-in pump that's housed inside the shell. And, when the bike is in the unfolded mode with the wheels extended, you can slip a briefcase into the center of the frame - out of view and out of the way. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
Hi, it was wonderful to read your opinion of your Skoot. I've been trawling the web to find information on these now scarce bikes and came across your article, thanks. I wonder, do you still have it? I've started a group on Facebook to collect and archive information on these, it would be great if you could share your experiences there. Tried to post a link but site won't let me so you can search FB groups and look for 'Skoot the suitcase bike'.
Regards, Clive.

I just spotted this on the local craigslist, walked about 5 km to see it, rode it back. A Giant FD-806, that will be nice for riding with my Wife when we travel.
I'll probably do a few minor mods, have another pair of handlebars, saddle, bell & a mirror.

I did the mods a few weeks ago: wider riser handlebars, new ergo grips, WTB saddle, new Kootu pedals & removed the fenders.

Well better late than never

Just mindful that this thread was started waaaay back....

Just bought my first folding bike - Dahon Mariner D8. Pretty excited about it, but the last time I rode a bike was a single speed almost 25 odd years back.... So while you do not forget to ride, I'm aware that technology and terminology has changed tremendously.
Looking forward to the expertise of the good folks here to come up to speed on my "bike education"

Cheers

Old Ernest (R) is definitely male. Like old Ernest, he looks so burly and stocky and manly. The Mu, on the other hand, is all sweet and feminine: willing yet genial; confident yet gentle; focused yet affable. Sounds very much worthy of the name Martha, don't you think?

Hi FFFietsen , Thanks for asking!
Yes I did get my first folding bike! I travelled to Montreal to get it. Motobecanes' with Pantin badges, I thought, signified a 1960s produced bicycle. But I think I'm wrong there.
But it's in very good share for its age.

Insights for German-made vintage Bike?

I have the Bike Friday folding bike. Specifically, the Pocket Rocket, and I swapped out the components for the Ultegra components. I'll provide a pic later (loaded during a tour).

I have a German-made Folding bike. I was told this was used around 1939 during the war. It was explained that there was a competition for bikes to help our troops get to their destinations after being parachuted. I am not able to post pictures being a newbie to the forum. Thanks for any help or insights.
