I'm 285. I've never gotten anything but supportive comments and thumbs-up from people. On the other hand, I wouldn't be caught dead in lycra...it's T-shirts and cargo shorts for me.

A good friend and former co-worker regularly went out riding with me, a few years before we were separated after a major layoff. In those days she was 5'10 and about 260#. She rode a Trek 1000 road bike, the aluminum one, and rode a tandem with her husband. On our rides we usually took a hilly metropark loop on which we both struggled up the hills, but rarely walked. Re: shorts! She always bought them from Terry. Her reason was the same as my wife's: fit. My wife and my coworker have totally different figures, but both looked great in Terry cycling shorts, and found good comfort.

The only thing I'm embarrassed about is letting myself get so damn out of shape and slow. I know there's only one way to fix that, but it's way easier to make excuses instead

The bottom line is, regardless of your current condition, if you are working to improve it, that is a positive thing. I would never even consider being embarrassed for exercise, in what ever form. People that would say anything negative are worthless, ignorant, etc., etc.... You should be proud of making the effort... As far as wearing bibs and a jersey, I would say go for it. I think it is far more comfortable to ride in than anything else. Of course it helps to ride with a supportive group , but if you have to ride alone so be it; the satisfaction should come from within. And yes, I hate to say it, but I have to agree with Wonderer518, the only thing I was upset about was letting myself go. When I got back into riding after 20+ years off I was VERY lucky to start back up with a supportive group. First my son then with the McLean County Wheelers from Bloomington/Norma, IL. So my hat is off to all who want to get back into the groove...

I wear lycra bib shorts with somewhat extra-long moisture-wicking athletic shirts. This keeps my undesired "ba-dunka-dunk" covered up. Baseball-styled jerseys are nice because they are typically a little longer in the back and shorter in front.
