Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Powertap hub: need help identifying

Hello all,

I just got a bike that has a Powertap read hub. I have done some searching but could not get a solid answer on which one the attached picture is. One thing the pic does not show is there is a very small white square on the outside area that has “Ant+” on it. Does anyone know which Powertap hub this is, and is it worth building a new set of wheels around it?

thanks for all the help!

It looks like it could be the Powertap SL hub. They are very reliable and if you wanted hub based power, yeah, go for it. I think you can even get the internals updated to the latest G3 internals, but you would have to contact Powertap about that.

thanks! I thought it may be the SL but was not sure. Is the G3 more reliable and or more accurate?

To be honest, I really don't know. I have been using a G3 hub since 2015 and it has been rock solid. I have only ever changed batteries and 1 firmware update.

I had the Powertap SL+ and it was upgraded with the G3 internals. You'll have to contact Quarq (https://www.quarq.com/product/powertap-g3-hub/) if they still do the upgrading.

I have a Powertap SL (which is slightly older than the OP's) and found the appropriate batteries on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075B3LB8K

To change them, you need a plastic tool that looks about like this:

to grip and turn the plastic dome part to get at the internals. From there, it's as simple as changing the batteries in any of the other stuff we deal with (speed/cadence sensors, etc.)

It's an old SL+ that has been cored out and replaced with G3 internals.
