Seems like we should have a rule, or law, or saying to the effect that: If you have to ask...

Just to be safe, use two zip ties and two layers of duck tape but I would verify health, life and disability insurance coverage.

Hey, he's thinking of using a worm clamp and JB Weld. But I should have said '... Maybe an instructor would weld it as was demo for class...'

There's nothing super exotic about welding Ti, either. I raced with a guy who made Ti expansion chambers for YSR50s using MIG.

That wouldn't cause a fatigue crack.

I knew this thread reminded me of something, but it only now just clicked: 1973 New York Mets

"You Gotta Believe!!!"

With Tug McGraw urging his teammates on and celebrating victories with what soon became the catch phrase of 1973, "You Gotta Believe!!!" the Mets kept zigging and zagging away from would-be tacklers, and taking an occasional side-swipe, headed for this most unlikely of pennants. Down the stretch, Yogi Berra, veteran of many a pennant race, ran four starters at the league: Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Jon Matlack, and George Stone, with the suddenly unhittable McGraw coming out of the pen with boisterous - and justified - confidence. (For his last 19 games, the screwball-throwing lefty showed 12 saves, 5 wins, and an ERA of 0.88).

I just had the following exchange with seller:

"Was the crack due to the headset installation?"

"Yes. Like I indicated earlier and according to what the Lynskey manufacturer said the Chris King headset tolerances are a smidge off."

Funny, I just installed a Chris King headset on a titanum frame (Sage). I was able to press it in by hand, and finish the job with some very light gentle tapping with a rubber mallet. If anything, the tolerances are more forgiving.

The seller is a pathological liar.

Here is a photo, just to convince you that I'm not making this up:

I find that highly unlikely. The Chris King is made from aluminum, which is way softer than titanium.
And King stuff is very precise. That seller already has zero credibility. Why start believing him now?

Well…If you are not concerned and are dismissive of opinions, why did you start this thread in the first place?

So it must have been riding over harsh surfaces?

I could remove the headset and install another one.

I'm no metallurgist, but I'm pretty sure that's not going to fix the crack.

Remove the headset and keep it. It is worth $188, which is $187 more than what the frame is worth.

Anyone who wouldn't disclose the existence of that crack prior to sale is a crook, ipso facto. Ask for your money back. If he refuses, think about small claims court.

Putting any more time or effort into repairing this would be a fool's errand. Riding it would be beyond stupid.

If the bike was safe to ride, why would this guy be unloading it?

Shoot Linsky an email and ask for the true story. I very much doubt the seller's story would be corroborated.

I got my titanium frame (shown above) for $2K on closeout sale at Jenson, fwiw.

My CK headset has been on my ti frame for over 6 years. No problemo.

Full disclosure: The frame is far better than the OP’s.

Fun fact: I basked in CK’s glow during Cycle Oregon 2007.

And have the headtube reamed post welding and prior to headset installation. Not to mention verify headset cup outside diameter and headtube inside diameter

How hard can it be ridden on the road? I mean, you're not doing wheelies and hopping curbs are you?
IMO, clamp will work.
Just out of curiosity, if you don't mind. What did you pay for it?

Contact your local high schools or Voc Tech schools and see if they would be willing to weld it for free as a demo for their pupils.

$700. Came with an extra wheelset. I've done the calculations and I could easily get my money back stripping and selling parts. That, coupled with the fact that the seller lives 90 minutes away, makes me reluctant to return.

I already own a Serotta titanium road bike, so it would be redundant. I want to ride this on gravel and CX courses.

Heck, just use some duck tape and bailin' wahr.

At least when it comes apart and you crash, you might get a softer landing than if you were on pavement.
