Closed out October with a 33-miler up to Highland Park. 46 degrees at the start, 57 degrees by the time I got home.

Rode up the North Branch Trail and passed through the Skokie Lagoons.

The wind was calm, which allowed for the water to reflect the trees.

Lots of dead trees in the swamp.

We’re past peak color, but there’s still some here and there.

When I got to the botanical garden, I was surprised to see many things still blooming. We haven’t had a hard frost yet.

Peaked inside of one of the many massive greenhouses. Plenty of cacti ready for winter.

Roses are still hanging in there.

Need another 100 miles to reach 2000 for the season.

Lovely weather today in the eastern Catskills. I did last week’s ride in reverse with a few extra miles tacked on for good measure. After decades of living in flatlands I wasn’t sure how I’d adapt the Mercian for longer and steeper hills. I’m quite pleased with the Sun crankset’s low gearing.

Speaking of greenhouses, I was doing one of my favorite rides, the one where I poke around the west hills and stare at old mansions, when I found this beauty:

It's attached to the back of a big, old place that must have been built by the owner of a concrete company.

I'm always rewarded when I turn down weird little streets like this:

Finally, to the parking lot of a local watering hole to meet a Craigslist seller who passed along a very nice Nitto Noodle for $10. The Super Course has been getting a little remodel, so I think it might get this bar, and whatever bar tape I can find to compliment the new seat.

Being retired has its perks.
Perfect 65 to 68 degree temps with light wind made for a wonderful Monday morning ride on my 1990 Bridgestone CB Zip.

Rene Herse Rat Trap tires contributed cush and smooth rolling.

Also first month in a very long I managed 400 miles.

JRA, spinning, trying to build lost fitness back up slowly. Took the Medici out today on a mix of road and trail (well, the only part of the trail I currently consider safe enough). Nice to be back riding the old bikes once again:

Road Trip With My New Italian Mistress... Sophia!

*
Just finished a new bike. Not my usual thing... Sophia is a 1986 Bianchi Squadra. I wrote all about this build here.

I took her to my favorite place for trail riding, Hastings, Minnesota:

She was 22.5 lbs when the dealer delivered her to the original owner. After undergoing my geezer custom comfort makeover, she bloated to an `orrible 23.6 lbs.!

But the extra pound-plus made her a much better bike for me. Check this out:

And Hastings is the best place in my world to debut a new build.

The trails and restaurants and local art scene are second to none in this area.

These are just a few of the shots I took today. I'll post the rest as time allows...

But let me just say this: I haven't lost my appreciation for lightweight roadbikes. They make me feel like an athlete again, when I build them right.

Riding Sophia is like having an affair with a sexy younger woman, without the guilt of explaining myself to Mrs. C.

Sophia in Hastings, Part II

Bookend Buffalo?

Mechanical Medley

For those of you from southern climes, this metallic monster is curling. See Winter Olympics...

Not sure what to call this. Scenic station?

Info stop?

A nice little climb gets you to views like this.

It was another beautiful day here in Minnesota - unseasonably warm with clear, blue skies. Today is a carbon copy... What am I doing indoors? See ya!

Very, too nice weather for the time of the year, but great to ride.

A new bridge has been build. On the former one I broke my right shoulder this month eight or nine years ago. It was slippery in the morning ...

Around town ride today on the Tommy, shaking out cobwebs from a night shift. I’m too old for that crap but riding helps to put some spunk back in the trunk.

Clouds moved out last night and nice, sunny and warm today. I'd yet to clean off my bike from last weekends gravel ride so I decided to double down and ride some more dirt before the bike bath.

Blue Ridge looking at Jarman Gap. The gravel road up that way is one of the more challenging ways up to (or down from for that matter) Skyline Drive. about 1500 ft elevation gain in 3 miles. Pic doesn't do justice to the imposing look you get in person. I turned left for home before I got there

Dick Woods Rd looking at the Blue Ridge. One of my favorite stretches of gravel

Newtown Rd, This ride has the unfortunate distinction of starting (here) and finishing on a climb.

I’ve enjoyed considerable exploration of those parts and used to comment on all “those ladders that the state put route numbers on”. Yes, some frightfully steep and twisted roads on both sides of the Blue Ridge.

Bit cold and snowy the last few days needed to get out for a bit so I took coll slightly snowy ride over to town. Took the Raliegh MT 200 since the Schwinn Mesa had a flat.

No ride today due to downpours but I did get in several hours of errand running yesterday logging 24 miles.

This Gary Fisher pleasantly surprised me as a great fun to ride purple urban cruiser.

2nd Stop

My second stop was at Chief William C. "Billy" Hewitt Park, a small park I have been wanting to ride for sometime, just never stopped by. Nice little park that has a short section of the Five Mile Creek Greenway in Tarrant, AL.

Back from nice trip to Great Barrington MA. Took my Roberts, regeared with 47-30 front rings. Well packed, no damage, flights on time, pretty nice fall weather. Very nice roads, drivers were well mannered. Unexpectedly ran into Alice’s Restaurant, Woody Guthrie Church. Some fine food shopping as well.
