Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

$20 Shimano 11-speed via eBay is most probably fake.

2 x $20 = $40. You can easily buy a genuine Ultegra chain from a reputable source for less than that. In October 2022 I even bought a Dura-Ace chain from Excel Sports for $39.

Exactly.

It seems incongruous for someone who owns not one, but two S-Works Tarmacs (with different font colors) to suggest saving money by buying a likely fake Shimano chain on eBay. Where is the value proposition there?

was your broken 105 chain genuine? If so, then even genuine parts fail

As outlined above, the broken 105 chain was OEM and genuine, and likely failed due to hydrogen embrittlement after soaking in purple degreaser.

Still don't see how the isolated failure of a genuine chain relates to the value proposition of a fake chain from eBay when one could readily afford the genuine article.

KMC sells 20-25$ chain I believe. Never bought the cheap ones, but that's what I would do.

Good thinking. You just don't buy counterfeit products, but it takes all kind of people to form a society.
